Chapter 9 - THE PRESS CONFERENCE

At 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, the grand auditorium on the third floor of Blackwell Meridian headquarters was packed with over two hundred journalists, financial reporters, and television camera crews.
The media feeding frenzy was at its peak. News outlets across the country were running stories speculating about the scandal, accusing Blackwell Meridian of corporate nepotism and ethical breach.
Behind the stage curtain, Nora stood alone, clutching her leather folder, her heart hammering against her ribs.
She was wearing her tailored charcoal suit—her armor.
Adrian walked up beside her, wearing a flawless black suit. He looked calm, powerful, and completely unbothered by the media storm outside.
"Are you ready?" Adrian asked gently.
Nora looked at him. "Are you sure you want me out there, Adrian? If I stay hidden, the story dies faster."
"If you stay hidden, they win," Adrian replied firmly. "You have nothing to hide from, Nora. You are the smartest person in that room. Show them."
He reached out, slipping his hand into hers, squeezing it tightly before stepping out onto the stage.
The auditorium erupted into a chaotic storm of flashing camera lights and shouting reporters as Adrian stepped up to the central podium.
Adrian raised one hand. The entire room went instantly silent.
"Good afternoon," Adrian said, his voice echoing powerfully through the auditorium speakers. "I’m going to make this very brief."
He turned slightly toward the curtain. "Miss Bennett, please join me."
Nora took a deep breath, held her head high, and walked out onto the stage, stepping up to the secondary microphone beside him. Camera flashes exploded like fireworks across the room.
"For the past six hours," Adrian spoke into the microphone, his gaze sweeping coldly over the reporters, "certain media outlets have published libelous claims regarding Miss Nora Bennett’s promotion within this company."
He pointed to a massive projection screen behind them.
"Displayed on this screen," Adrian continued, "is the mathematical audit of the Vance-Vanguard acquisition—an audit performed exclusively by Miss Bennett in less than three hours. An audit that identified a footnote seventeen valuation liability, saving Blackwell Meridian six hundred million dollars."
The reporters stared at the complex financial data filling the screen, murmuring in realization.
"Miss Bennett was promoted because she is an extraordinary analyst," Adrian said, his voice hard as diamond. "Her work stands on its own merits."
He paused. Then, he looked directly at the primary camera lens in the front row.
"As for the photograph taken in London," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a clear, quiet, and deeply personal tone that captivated every person in the room. "The personal relationship between Miss Bennett and myself began after her analytical brilliance saved this company. I am pursuing her personally because she is an extraordinary woman. And if anyone in this industry has a problem with that... they can answer directly to me."
A collective gasp swept through the auditorium, followed by a frantic wave of camera flashes.
Nora looked at Adrian, her eyes wide with shock and profound emotion.
He had just put his entire corporate reputation, his personal privacy, and his public standing on the line—all to protect her honor in front of the entire world.
Adrian stepped back from the microphone, reached out his hand to Nora, and said loud enough for the front row to hear:
May you like
"Come on, Nora. Let's go back to work."
Nora smiled, took his hand proudly, and walked off the stage beside him, leaving the media in total awe.
