Chapter 6 - FOOTNOTE SEVENTEEN

The headquarters of Vanguard International sat in a massive, cold glass tower in the heart of London’s financial district.
The board room on the fortieth floor was lined with dark walnut paneling, housing a twenty-foot polished conference table around which sat twelve senior British executives, four legal partners, and Lord Arthur Vanguard himself—a stern, silver-haired aristocrat with cold blue eyes and a reputation for crushing smaller firms.
Adrian sat at the head of the guest side of the table, looking completely at ease, resting his hands casually on the wood.
Nora sat directly to his right, her leather folder open, her dark charcoal suit making her look every bit as formidable as the billionaire beside her.
"Adrian," Lord Vanguard said, leaning back in his leather chair, swirling a cup of Earl Grey tea. "We’ve been negotiating this merger for eight months. Twelve billion is a fair price for our European network. My board is ready to sign the preliminary heads of agreement today."
"Twelve billion was a fair price yesterday, Arthur," Adrian said smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless authority that dominated the vast room.
Lord Vanguard raised a silver eyebrow. "And what changed overnight?"
Adrian didn't answer. He simply turned his head slightly toward Nora.
"My primary analyst will explain," Adrian said calmly.
All sixteen pairs of eyes in the room snapped directly onto Nora.
For a split second, Nora felt a surge of adrenaline spike through her blood. But then she looked down at the highlighted figures in her folder, felt the steady, unshakeable presence of Adrian beside her, and stepped into her power.
Nora sat up straight, her voice clear, articulate, and completely devoid of fear.
"What changed overnight, Lord Vanguard," Nora began, sliding twelve copies of her three-page report across the polished table, "is Footnote Seventeen on page four hundred and twelve of your secondary Luxembourg filing."
The lead legal partner for Vanguard winced almost imperceptibly.
"Your Frankfurt subsidiary," Nora continued smoothly, meeting Lord Vanguard’s icy blue gaze without blinking, "is currently carrying forty-two million dollars in unhedged commercial lease liabilities routed through a special-purpose vehicle in Jersey. If the European commercial index shifts two percent next quarter, your net operational asset value drops by five percent."
Lord Vanguard’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. He slammed his teacup onto its saucer with a sharp clatter.
"This is outrageous!" Vanguard barked, glaring at his legal team. "Who is this girl?!"
"This girl," Adrian’s voice sliced through the room like a steel blade, cold, sharp, and terrifyingly lethal, "is the brightest financial mind in my company. And she just exposed a six-hundred-million-dollar valuation fraud hidden in your filings."
The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
Adrian stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket. He placed one hand flat on the mahogany table, leaning over toward Lord Vanguard.
"The new purchase price is eleven billion, four hundred million," Adrian declared smoothly. "You have until three o'clock today to accept the revised terms, Arthur. If you refuse, I pull Blackwell Meridian’s capital out of the deal completely, and I publish Miss Bennett’s analysis in the Financial Times tomorrow morning."

Adrian looked at Nora, offering his hand. "Let's go, Nora."
Nora stood up smoothly, closed her folder, took Adrian’s hand, and walked out of the Vanguard boardroom beside him, leaving sixteen speechless British executives sitting in total ruin behind them.
