Chapter 3 - THE SAPPHIRE'S CURSE

The penthouse on Lake Shore Drive was a fortress of black marble, reinforced steel, and floor-to-ceiling ballistic glass overlooking the churning darkness of Lake Michigan.
While Dante’s security detail locked down every perimeter access point, I stood in his library, nursing a tumbler of aged bourbon. The warmth of the liquor cut through the lingering shock of the evening, but it did nothing to quiet the storm brewing across Chicago.
On the massive digital display integrated into the library wall, silent news feeds and encrypted syndicate channels flickered uncontrollably.
MISTRESS CROWNED AT THE DRAKE: CASTELLANO HEIR DISOWNED BY SOCIALITE WIFE.
MORETTI TRUST IN QUESTION: SYNDICATE STOCKS PLUMMET 14% OVERNIGHT.
My phone, which Dante’s tech team had completely cloned and isolated within a secure firewall, was blowing up with frantic messages. Forty-seven missed calls from Roman. Twelve from his lead legal counsel. Three from Frank Lane.
Then a video message pinged through an encrypted frequency.
Dante walked into the room, carrying a fresh dossier. He stopped beside me and tapped the screen to play the intercepted feed from the Castellano estate in Gold Coast.
The video was chaotic. It was recorded by one of Roman's domestic staff.
In the grand drawing room, Roman was tearing the place apart. He had smashed a seventeenth-century Venetian mirror to splinters. Vanessa stood backed against the grand fireplace, sobbing hysterically, clutching her hand to her chest.
"Give me the fucking ring, Vanessa!" Roman roared, his bespoke tuxedo torn at the collar, his polished veneer stripped down to raw, rabid madness. "Take it off right now!"
"I can't!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with terror. "My fingers swelled up after the champagne! It won't budge! Roman, you're hurting me—"
"You stupid little whore!" Roman lunged forward, grabbing her wrist with enough violence to bruise bone. "You thought this was jewelry? You thought this was a prize? If that ring leaves this house on your finger, Frank will claim my shipping lines before sunrise! Cut it off if you have to!"
Before Roman could drag Vanessa toward the kitchen, the double doors of the drawing room burst open. Frank Lane marched in with six heavily armed enforcers, their trench coats pulled back to reveal automatic weapons.
"Touch my daughter again, Castellano," Frank’s voice boomed through the speaker, "and we’ll see how long you breathe without a throat."
The feed cut out into static.
I let out a slow, steady breath. The beast I had lived with for four years—the man who had controlled every dress I wore, every dinner I attended, every dime I spent—was now cornered in a cage of his own making.
"Frank won't kill him yet," Dante said, stepping closer. His presence was commanding, radiating a lethal calm that made Roman look like a petulant child throwing a tantrum. "Frank wants the authorization codes that go with the cipher. He knows Roman doesn't have them. Which means by dawn, both of them will realize there is only one person alive who holds the biometric override."
"Me," I said, meeting Dante's dark eyes.
"You," Dante agreed. He set the dossier on the mahogany desk between us and slid it forward. "Your father knew Roman was treacherous, Evelyn. But he was dying of cancer before he could remove Roman from the family board. So he left a safeguard with me. He made me the trustee of your survival."
I opened the folder. Inside were the original ownership deeds to the Moretti fleet, the private security charters, and an alliance treaty signed in my father’s unmistakable handwriting fifteen years ago.
"Why didn't you step in four years ago?" I asked, a sliver of old pain sharpening my words. "Why let me marry him?"
"Because your father’s will explicitly forbade my interference until you took the ring off by your own sovereign choice," Dante replied, his voice softening with genuine gravity. "He said: 'A Moretti who is rescued remains a hostage. A Moretti who frees herself becomes a queen.'"
Dante reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing against my bare knuckles.

"You freed yourself tonight, Evelyn. Now, let’s go take back what belongs to you."
