Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Dynasty

Brendan stood frozen, his eyes bulging as if his brain refused to process the English language.
"No..." Brendan stammered, shaking his head frantically. "No, no, no! That's a lie! My grandfather founded Morrison Logistics! We built the company!"
"Your grandfather founded a regional trucking firm that went bankrupt in 2018, Brendan," I said, stepping out from behind the table. I wrapped Arthur’s dry overcoat tightly around my seven-month pregnant belly, looking down at the wet floor beneath my soaked shoes. "When we met six years ago, your family was twelve days away from federal receivership. I bought your family’s $80 million debt through a Delaware holding firm. I injected $300 million of my personal capital to turn Morrison Logistics into an international freight giant."
I took a slow, deliberate step toward Diane.
"I let your son pretend to be the 'visionary CEO' because I loved him," I continued, my voice cutting through her like a scalpel. "I let you treat me like a poor charity case at every Thanksgiving dinner because I believed in family modesty. I sat back while you called me a leech, a burden, and a penniless orphan."
Diane’s face had turned a horrific shade of ash-grey. She reached out, grasping the edge of the dining chair to keep her knees from buckling. "Cassidy... darling... you... you can't be serious... We... we were just joking tonight! It was just a little house play—"
"Protocol 7 is not a joke, Mrs. Morrison," Arthur interrupted, pulling three red-labeled folders from his briefcase and placing them on the table.
"What is Protocol 7?!" Brendan yelled, his voice cracking in sheer panic. "What does it mean?!"
"Protocol 7," Arthur explained flatly, "is the emergency corporate revocation clause embedded in your executive employment contract. Upon activation by the Chairman due to gross moral breach or personal safety threat, the following actions occur automatically within fifteen minutes:
Immediate Termination: Brendan Morrison is removed as Chief Executive Officer of Morrison Logistics for gross incompetence and personal liability.
Asset Seizure: The Morrison family trust fund, which was backed by Vanguard capital stock, is frozen.
Foreclosure: The Morrison estate—this house, the land, the guest houses, and the vehicles parked outside—are corporate assets owned by Vanguard Real Estate Holdings. Your lease is terminated as of 8:15 PM tonight.
Corporate Credit Line Revocation: All executive black cards held by Brendan, Diane, and Jessica Hayes are canceled."
Right on cue, Jessica’s phone screen lit up on the table with three consecutive text alerts from her bank: "ALERT: Your corporate credit card ending in 4092 has been declined." "ALERT: Your corporate lease authorization for 2026 Porsche Cayenne has been revoked." "ALERT: Personal line of credit frozen pending audit."
Jessica let out a blood-curdling shriek, dropping her phone onto her plate. "Brendan! Do something! My car! My cards! They just closed my accounts!"
"Cassidy!" Brendan roared, lunging forward across the table, his face twisted in absolute desperation. "You can't do this to me! I'm the father of your baby! We spent six years together!"

Marcus Vance moved instantly. Before Brendan’s hands could come within three feet of me, Marcus grabbed Brendan’s collar, twisted his arm behind his back, and slammed him chest-first onto the mahogany dining table, pinning him flat against the very rug where my dripping water was still pooling.
"Touch her again, Mr. Morrison," Marcus growled into his ear, "and you leave this house in an ambulance."
