Chapter 6 - A New Foundation

With the threat eliminated and the shadows of the past cleared away, Elias made a radical decision.

He didn't want a fortress anymore. He wanted a home.

Over the next two months, he began systematically restructuring his business empire. He stepped back from the volatile, dangerous real estate acquisitions and high-risk syndicates that had kept him tethered to the underworld, handing operational control over to trusted lieutenants while liquidating his more controversial assets into legitimate, transparent philanthropic ventures.

He sold the sprawling, isolated estate outside Chicago and purchased a stunning, light-filled historic brownstone closer to the city center—a place with big windows, an open courtyard, and rooms meant to be lived in, not hidden behind high security gates.

Grace took charge of the redesign. Watching her paint walls, pick out vintage furniture, and fill the new home with art, laughter, and warmth became Elias’s favorite part of the day. For the first time in his life, he came home before midnight. Sometimes he even made it home by dinner.

One evening, as they sat together on their new rooftop terrace watching the Chicago skyline twinkle against the twilight, Grace leaned her head on his shoulder.

“Do you miss it?” she asked quietly. “The power? The adrenaline?”

Elias looked down at her, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close against the evening chill.

“I used to think power was control,” Elias said thoughtfully. “Making people fear you, keeping everyone at a distance so no one could ever touch your weak spots. I was wrong.”

“What is it, then?” she asked, looking up.

“Being able to look at the person you love most in the world and knowing that you have nothing left to hide,” Elias answered, kissing her forehead. “That’s real power.”
