Chapter 2 - The Aftermath of the Ripped Seam

The silence that followed the sound of tearing fabric was absolute. For three agonizing seconds, the high-end sound system seemed to hum in a vacuum, amplifying the collective intake of breath from two hundred invited guests. Vanessa was frozen in a half-crouch, her face transitioning rapidly from pale shock to a furious, blotchy crimson. The imported silk of her custom designer gown—a dress Daniel had proudly bragged cost more than a small car—had given way right across the back seam, permanently cementing her fate to the velvet upholstery of the bride's chair.

Daniel scrambled to his feet, his chair screeching loudly against the polished parquet floor.

"Vanessa! What—how did you—" he stammered, his eyes darting frantically around the room. He reached for his jacket to cover her, but in his panic, he only managed to trip over his own custom-tailored trousers, stumbling awkwardly against the edge of the mahogany head table. Cutlery rattled. A crystal flute of champagne tipped over, spilling a golden puddle across the pristine white linen tablecloth and soaking the corner of Vanessa’s bridal veil.

"Do something, you idiot!" Vanessa hissed, her voice vibrating with a lethal, trembling fury. She swatted away his hands, glaring daggers at the surrounding tables. Several bridesmaids at the front row were biting their lips hard, desperately trying to suppress hysterical laughter, while older relatives exchanged scandalized whispers.

From my seat near the back, I calmly took a slow sip of my sparkling water. Beside me, Elena looked down at the empty velvet chair we had occupied just moments before, then across the room at the chaotic scene unfolding at the head table. She didn't say a word, but a knowing, quiet glint touched her eyes. She hadn't seen me switch the chairs, but she knew her husband well enough to recognize calculated poetry in motion.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC stammered, realizing the program was violently off-rails and scrambling to salvage the moment. "A minor wardrobe malfunction! Let's give the happy couple a round of applause while they... ah, adjust!"

The applause that followed was thin, nervous, and dripping with awkwardness.

Daniel finally managed to haul Vanessa upward with a sharp, undignified yank, accompanied by another distinct sound of fabric yielding. Vanessa let out a sharp gasp, clutching the remaining fabric of her dress around her legs like a desperate shield, and fled through the side service doors toward the bridal suite, leaving Daniel standing alone in the spotlight, sweating through his tuxedo shirt and smiling a sickly, apologetic grin at the crowd.

As Daniel hurried after his humiliated bride, I leaned over to Elena.

"Let's go for a walk in the courtyard, my love," I murmured softly. "The reception dinner is about to get very interesting, but the evening air is lovely right now."

Elena smiled, linking her arm through mine. "Arthur, what did you do?"

"I simply ensured," I replied, guiding her toward the glass doors leading out into the moonlit gardens, "that what goes around, finally comes around."
