Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Dozens of federal agents clad in windbreakers bearing the letters FBI spilled out of the vehicles, weapons raised, completely surrounding Marcus Croft and the abandoned nuclear station.

"MARCUS CROFT!" an agent roared through a megaphone. "DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND GET ON THE GROUND IMMEDIATELY!"

Croft stood frozen under the blinding floodlights of the federal vehicles. The aristocratic, untouchable billionaire was gone, replaced by a hollow, broken old man whose thirty-year empire of crime had just vanished into thin air in less than five minutes.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Croft reached down toward his walking stick.

"Eric, look out!" I screamed through the car window, throwing the SUV door open and sprinting across the damp asphalt toward my husband.

Croft pulled the silver handle of the walking stick, revealing a thin, deadly six-inch steel blade concealed inside the shaft. With a final, insane burst of desperate rage, he lunged forward, driving the blade directly toward Eric's chest!

Eric didn't panic. He sidestepped the thrust with practiced fluidity, grabbing Croft's wrist, twisting it sharply outward. The steel blade clattered onto the wet ground. Eric swept Croft's legs out from under him, slamming the older man heavily onto the asphalt and pinning his arms firmly behind his back.

Three FBI tactical agents rushed forward, taking over the restraint, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around Croft's wrists.

"Eric Vance!" a tall, sharp-featured man in a dark trench coat called out, stepping through the circle of agents. He held up a gold federal badge. "I'm Special Agent Miller, Federal Organized Crime Taskforce. Your father's automated protocol contacted my office directly three hours ago."

Eric stood up slowly, breathing heavily, wiping a mix of sweat and rain from his eyes. "Is it over, Agent Miller?"

"The Apex Group is completely neutralized," Agent Miller confirmed, looking at Eric with profound respect. "We've arrested fourteen senior members in D.C., New York, and Chicago over the last two hours. Your father's evidence was flawless. It's the largest corporate crime bust in American history."

Miller turned his gaze to me as I reached Eric's side, throwing my arms around my husband's waist, burying my face in his damp chest.

"And Mrs. Whitaker," Agent Miller added with a faint smile. "The Amber Alert and domestic charges against your husband have been officially expunged. The local police chief who issued those warrants is currently in handcuffs in San Diego."

Hannah stepped out of the SUV, holding baby Noah securely in her arms, walking slowly toward us through the misty rain.

Agent Miller looked at the young woman and the child, bowing his head slightly. "Hannah Vance. Your mother and father fought a very long war to protect you. Today, that war is officially over."

Hannah broke into deep, cleansing tears, collapsing against my shoulder as I wrapped my free arm around her and the baby.

Eric looked down at his sister, at his infant nephew, and finally at me—the woman who had refused to leave his side in the darkest hour of his life.

The first golden rays of the morning sun began to break through the dark coastal clouds over the Pacific Ocean, bathing the concrete domes and the wet asphalt in a warm, brilliant, golden light.

The thirty-year nightmare of the Vance family was finally at an end.
