Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Julian Vance

The fog rolled across the cracked asphalt of the abandoned facility, swallowing the two men as they approached each other under the flickering yellow glow of a single sodium streetlamp.

Inside the SUV, I opened the audio monitor app on my phone, listening intently to the microscopic microphone clipped to Eric's lapel.

"You picked a grim venue for our final meeting, Eric," Croft's smooth, aristocratic voice rasped through the speaker. "The ruins of an abandoned power station. Very poetic."

"My father built the security grid for this facility in 1988," Eric replied, his voice calm and steady. "I thought it was fitting."

Croft stopped ten feet away, resting both hands on the silver handle of his walking stick. "Where are the decryption keys?"

"My wife is sitting in that SUV fifty yards behind me," Eric said, pointing back through the fog. "She holds the master tablet. It is currently broadcasting a live telemetry stream to an offshore server. If my heart rate drops below sixty beats per minute, or if I fail to enter a confirmation code every five minutes, the tablet automatically wipes the Apex Group's accounts and releases the full evidence ledger to the Department of Justice."

Croft's icy composure flickered for a fraction of a second. A cold, bitter rage flashed across his pale face. "You really are Julian's son. Always hiding behind clever fail-safes and digital dead-man switches."

"My father died because he trusted you, Croft," Eric said, taking a step closer. "He considered you a friend. You sat at our dinner table in Cincinnati. You held my sister when she was an infant."

"Your father was a fool!" Croft spat, his refined mask slipping entirely, revealing the twisted, greedy monster beneath. "He was an idealist who thought he could use defense technology to change the world! He didn't understand that power isn't built on ideals—it's built on control! We created the Apex Group to rule this country from the shadows, and Julian tried to burn it down because of a moral conscience!"

"He didn't try to burn it down," Eric countered quietly. "He succeeded."

Croft frowned. "What?"

Eric reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, black satellite trigger device. "My father knew you would hunt his children until the day you died, Croft. He knew that as long as the Apex Group existed, Hannah and I would never be safe. So thirty years ago, he didn't just lock your money."

Eric pressed the red button on the trigger.

Across the facility, high above on the giant concrete dome of the reactor building, a massive, ultra-bright commercial projection system hummed to life.

A white beam of light cut through the thick coastal fog, projecting a seventy-foot-wide digital video screen directly onto the side of the concrete structure.

On the screen was a live, high-definition broadcast stream from a Federal District Courtroom in Washington, D.C.

Sitting at the judge's bench was a stern-looking woman flanked by federal prosecutors, armed U.S. Marshals, and bank regulatory officials.

A voice boomed through the facility speakers—the voice of the lead federal prosecutor:

"This is a live judicial asset seizure execution under the RICO Act. As of 3:45 AM Eastern Standard Time, all domestic and international assets belonging to Marcus Croft and the Apex Group have been permanently frozen by order of the United States Federal Court."

Croft stared up at the giant concrete wall in sheer, paralyzed horror. The leather briefcase slipped from his numb fingers, crashing onto the asphalt.

"No..." Croft whispered, his face turning ghostly white. "No... how...?"

"The time-lock didn't just open the ledger for us, Croft," Eric said, stepping up to stand inches from the ruined man. "It automatically transmitted the full biometric proof of your crimes directly to the Federal Reserve three hours ago. The money isn't locked anymore. It's gone. Seized by the government you tried to buy."

Sirens suddenly echoed through the surrounding hills.

Dozens of red and blue police lights cut through the thick fog along the coastal highway as a convoy of black federal SUVs and armed tactical units swept into the facility driveway, surrounding the area completely.
