Chapter 15 - THE FATHER WHO KNEW

Z

Lorenzo stopped the video.

No one objected.

He stood beside the computer.

Hands flat on the table.

Head lowered.

Naomi did not touch him.

Not yet.

Shaw remained near the window.

Carlo stared at the frozen image of Giovanni DeLuca.

Finally Lorenzo pressed play.

His father continued.

“Mateo came to me when he was twenty-eight.”

Lorenzo’s face tightened.

“He wanted authority.”

Giovanni coughed.

“I saw ambition in him. I also saw resentment.”

Shaw watched carefully.

“I believed Lorenzo needed men around him who were hungry.”

Lorenzo whispered, “You idiot.”

Naomi looked at him.

Giovanni continued.

“I underestimated what hunger becomes when it is fed by humiliation.”

Mateo had always believed he deserved more.

The throne.

The name.

Recognition.

Giovanni had seen it.

And kept him close anyway.

“Years later, Mateo discovered the network.”

The video crackled.

“I should have destroyed it.”

Shaw spoke quietly.

“Yes.”

“But I believed I could use him to dismantle it from within.”

Lorenzo laughed bitterly.

“He used you.”

Giovanni seemed almost to answer.

“I was arrogant.”

Silence.

Lorenzo stared.

His father had never admitted that while alive.

Not once.

“I told Mateo pieces of the operation. He found the rest himself.”

Giovanni looked toward something off camera.

“By then, Mara Costa had begun asking questions.”

Carlo moved closer.

Giovanni continued.

“She was brave.”

Carlo’s eyes filled.

“She came to me before she went to Shaw.”

Everyone froze.

Carlo whispered, “What?”

“She believed Declan was responsible for the network.”

Shaw closed his eyes.

“I told her the truth.”

Naomi leaned forward.

Giovanni said, “Mateo was rebuilding it.”

Carlo’s hands shook.

“She asked me to help expose him.”

Giovanni swallowed.

“I refused.”

Carlo stepped toward the screen.

“Why?”

His voice cracked.

“Why?”

The dead man continued.

“Because exposure would have destroyed Lorenzo.”

Lorenzo went pale.

Naomi understood.

His father had chosen his son’s empire over Mara’s life.

Giovanni stared into the camera.

“I convinced myself I was protecting my family.”

He looked older.

“I was protecting my pride.”

Carlo turned away.

Naomi covered her mouth.

Giovanni continued.

“Mara died three weeks later.”

Carlo left the room.

Nobody stopped him.

The recording continued.

“After that, I began building this archive.”

The flash drive.

Every name.

Every payment.

Every recording.

“I intended to destroy the network after my death.”

Shaw laughed softly.

“You left it for everyone else.”

Giovanni seemed to know the accusation was coming.

“I was a coward.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

Naomi reached for his hand.

This time he let her.

Giovanni continued.

“Declan.”

Shaw looked at the screen.

“I did not claim you because I feared my father.”

Shaw’s expression did not move.

“I told myself money was enough.”

Shaw’s jaw tightened.

“It was not.”

Naomi looked at him.

For the first time, she saw the child beneath the enemy.

Giovanni said, “Lorenzo.”

Lorenzo stared.

“I made you inherit sins you never committed.”

Lorenzo’s fingers tightened around Naomi’s.

“But you benefited from them.”

That hurt.

Because it was true.

“You cannot undo what I built.”

Giovanni paused.

“But you can decide whether it survives you.”

The video ended.

No dramatic confession.

No final goodbye.

Just black screen.

Lorenzo sat down.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Carlo returned.

His face was wet.

He did not hide it.

“What do we do?”

Lorenzo looked at him.

Then at Shaw.

Then at Naomi.

The answer came slowly.

“We burn it.”

Shaw frowned.

“The drive?”

“The network.”

Naomi studied him.

“How?”

Lorenzo looked at the files.

“Giovanni said exposure would destroy me.”

“Yes.”

“So we expose it.”

Carlo stared.

“Everything?”

“Everything that does not endanger protected people.”

Naomi nodded.

“We separate victims from operators.”

Shaw looked skeptical.

“You think governments won’t bury it?”

“Some will.”

Lorenzo stood.

“So we make it impossible.”

Naomi understood.

Multiple jurisdictions.

Multiple journalists.

Multiple prosecutors.

Multiple independent releases.

No single point of failure.

Shaw looked at his brother.

“This will destroy half your companies.”

“Probably.”

“Banks freeze assets.”

“Yes.”

“Partners leave.”

“Yes.”

“You could lose everything.”

Lorenzo looked at Naomi.

“No.”

She held his gaze.

He continued.

“I already learned what everything is.”

Shaw looked away.

The meeting Harcourt planned was the next night.

Instead of attacking it with guns, they designed something far more dangerous.

Evidence.

Naomi contacted three international legal organizations through the foundation.

Carlo contacted a prosecutor Mara had trusted.

Shaw supplied account routes.

Lorenzo supplied corporate records.

By midnight, the package was ready.

Then Harcourt called.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

“You are making a mistake.”

Lorenzo answered.

“I inherited several.”

“You release those files, you create chaos.”

“So?”

“People die.”

“We’re redacting protected identities.”

Harcourt laughed.

“You think you understand the system?”

“No.”

Lorenzo looked at Naomi.

“But I understand men who claim bad things must continue because stopping them is inconvenient.”

Harcourt went silent.

“You sound like your father.”

“No.”

Lorenzo’s voice hardened.

“That’s the point.”

The release began at six the next morning.

By seven, three newsrooms had the files.

By eight, prosecutors in London and Rome were moving.

By nine, bank accounts froze.

By ten, Harcourt disappeared.

By eleven, two executives resigned.

By noon, one politician denied everything.

At twelve fifteen, Carlo received a photograph.

Edward Harcourt.

Standing beside Eva’s school gate.

Taken that morning.

Beneath it:

YOU BURNED THE NETWORK.

NOW I BURN THE FAMILY.

Lorenzo stared.

Naomi’s face drained.

Carlo grabbed his gun.

Then another message arrived.

Not from Harcourt.

May you like

From Stefan.

I HAVE HIM.
