Chapter 14 - THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS

Z

Lorenzo read the sentence six times.

DECLAN SHAW - BIOLOGICAL SON.

He looked at Naomi.

She looked back.

Carlo sat across from them.

Nobody knew what to say.

Finally Lorenzo laughed.

One quiet, empty sound.

“Of course.”

Naomi frowned.

“Of course what?”

“Of course my father had another son.”

He stood.

“Why not?”

“Lorenzo.”

“Why not hide one more person? One more account? One more company? One more family?”

He walked toward the window.

“All my life that man talked about loyalty.”

Naomi watched him.

“He may not have known.”

Lorenzo turned.

“He knew everything.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Neither do you.”

There was anger in his voice.

Not at Naomi.

But she still felt it.

Carlo quietly left the room.

Smart man.

Naomi stayed.

“Talk to me.”

“I am talking.”

“No. You’re performing.”

Lorenzo stared.

“That thing where you get angry enough that nobody can get close.”

“I’m fine.”

“You just discovered the man you’ve spent nine years trying to kill may be your brother.”

“I said I’m fine.”

Naomi walked closer.

“Then look at me.”

He did.

His eyes gave him away.

Not anger.

Grief.

Again.

Another version of his father disappearing.

Another part of his own life built on missing information.

Naomi touched his hand.

Lorenzo looked down.

“I hated him.”

“Shaw?”

“Yes.”

“You had reasons.”

“What if he knew?”

“Knew what?”

“That we were brothers.”

Naomi considered it.

“Then he still tried to kill you.”

“Exactly.”

“Which means biology changes nothing.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“That sounded very DeLuca.”

“Don’t insult me.”

He almost smiled.

The next morning, Lorenzo sent Shaw one message.

WE NEED TO TALK.

Shaw replied:

TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH.

They met at an abandoned theatre in Soho.

Neutral location.

No armed men in the room.

Plenty outside.

Naomi came with Lorenzo.

Shaw noticed.

“You bring her everywhere now?”

“Yes.”

Naomi answered before Lorenzo could.

“Problem?”

Shaw smiled faintly.

“No.”

Lorenzo placed Mara’s file on the stage.

“Is it true?”

Shaw stared at the folder.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

“You knew.”

“Since I was twenty-two.”

“And you said nothing.”

“What should I have said?”

Shaw stepped closer.

“Hello, brother. Your father slept with my mother while married to yours?”

Lorenzo did not react.

Shaw continued.

“My mother was eighteen.”

Naomi went still.

“Giovanni was thirty-eight.”

Lorenzo’s face changed.

Shaw saw it.

“Yes.”

The room became colder.

“He paid for us,” Shaw said. “Apartment. school. university.”

“Did he acknowledge you?”

“Privately.”

“Publicly?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Your grandfather.”

Shaw laughed bitterly.

“Family honor.”

Lorenzo looked away.

The phrase had poisoned enough lives.

Naomi asked, “Why become his enemy?”

Shaw looked at her.

“I didn’t.”

Lorenzo turned back.

“What?”

“Not at first.”

Shaw walked toward the old stage seats.

“After Giovanni died, Mateo approached me.”

“When?”

“Nine years ago.”

The year the war began.

“He told me Lorenzo planned to remove everyone connected to his father’s private network.”

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“He lied.”

“I know that now.”

Shaw nodded.

“Back then, I believed him.”

“So you attacked me.”

“Yes.”

“You killed my men.”

“Yes.”

“You stabbed me in Manchester.”

Shaw almost smiled.

“That was not me personally.”

“Comforting.”

Naomi stepped between the tension.

“Mateo created the war.”

Shaw nodded.

“He needed both sides distracted while he rebuilt Giovanni’s information business.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“And you never figured it out?”

“Mara did.”

That silenced him.

Shaw continued.

“When she came to me, everything changed.”

“You helped her.”

“I tried.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

Again, no excuse.

Lorenzo stared at the man he had hated for years.

Same jawline.

Same dark eyes.

Same habit of becoming quieter when angry.

It was suddenly obvious.

That made it worse.

Naomi opened Antonio’s ledger.

“So who controls the network now?”

Shaw looked at the book.

“Harcourt controls London.”

“Others?”

“Paris. Rome. Toronto. New York.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“How large is this?”

“Large enough that Mateo was only a middleman.”

Naomi felt cold.

“Then Antonio?”

“Old money.”

“Harcourt?”

“Management.”

“And the top?”

Shaw looked at them.

“Nobody knows.”

Lorenzo laughed.

“Of course.”

Shaw continued.

“There’s a meeting in forty-eight hours.”

“Where?”

“London.”

“Who?”

“Harcourt and the regional heads.”

Naomi understood.

“You want the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“To destroy it?”

“No.”

Lorenzo narrowed his eyes.

“You changed your mind.”

Shaw looked at him.

“Because Mara left something in her file.”

Carlo had missed it.

A coded note inside the back cover.

Shaw placed a copy on the table.

Mara had written:

THE LEDGER IS NOT THE EVIDENCE.

IT IS THE KEY.

Lorenzo looked at Naomi.

Naomi looked at the leather book.

Shaw said, “There is something hidden inside it.”

They spent two hours examining the ledger.

Nothing.

No compartments.

No loose pages.

Then Naomi noticed the page numbers.

Thirty-two.

Thirty-four.

Thirty-five.

Page thirty-three was missing.

Except the stitching showed it had never been removed.

It had never existed.

Naomi opened her mother’s letters.

One sentence came back to her.

WHEN NUMBERS LIE, READ THE SPACES.

She held the ledger beneath a lamp.

The gaps between page numbers formed coordinates.

Lorenzo entered them.

A location appeared.

London.

City of London.

Underground.

Shaw stared.

“I know that place.”

“What is it?”

“Old private vault.”

Naomi looked at him.

“Whose?”

Shaw’s expression darkened.

“Giovanni’s.”

That night, they entered the vault beneath an old merchant bank.

Inside one deposit box was a flash drive.

Nothing else.

They returned to Lorenzo’s safe house.

Carlo connected it to an isolated computer.

One folder opened.

Thousands of documents.

Witness names.

Payments.

Recordings.

Videos.

Then Naomi saw one file.

LORENZO DELUCA.

She clicked.

A video appeared.

Giovanni DeLuca sat behind a desk.

Older.

Sick.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If Lorenzo is watching this, then I failed.”

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

His father continued.

“And if Declan is beside him, then perhaps I failed twice.”

Nobody in the room moved.

Giovanni looked tired.

Human.

“For years, I told myself the network protected our family.”

He paused.

“It did not.”

“It protected power.”

Lorenzo stared at the screen.

Then Giovanni said the sentence that silenced both brothers.

“Declan, I knew you were my son.”

Shaw looked away.

“And Lorenzo, I knew Mateo would betray you.”

Lorenzo stood.

May you like

The video continued.

“I let it happen anyway.”
