Chapter 5 - The Man Everyone Feared

They reached Elena’s restoration studio in twelve minutes.
The front window had been shattered.
Adrien insisted she remain in the SUV until his security team cleared the building.
For once, Elena didn't argue.
She sat watching broken glass glitter across the sidewalk and wondered how quickly a normal life could become unrecognizable.
Yesterday morning, her greatest concern had been completing a nineteenth-century family Bible for a client.
Now her husband was fleeing the country after apparently trying to frame her for financial crimes.
Marcus returned.
“Clear.”
Elena entered.
The damage was selective.
Shelves had been emptied.
Cabinets opened.
Boxes overturned.
But expensive restoration equipment remained untouched.
“They were searching,” Elena said.
“For whatever Vanessa hid,” Adrien replied.
Elena walked through the wreckage.
“What would she choose?”
“You know the room better than we do.”
“No. I mean why here?”
Adrien considered it.
“Because Daniel dismissed your work.”
That stopped her.
“He never came here unless he had to.”
“Exactly.”
Elena looked around differently.
Vanessa had known Daniel.
Known his arrogance.
If she needed to hide something from him, she might choose the place he considered too insignificant to examine closely.
Elena began studying the shelves.
Hundreds of books.
Some belonged to clients.
Others were awaiting restoration.
One shelf contained abandoned projects Daniel had complained about for years.
“Old junk,” he called them.
Elena pulled out a damaged leather ledger.
Nothing.
Then another.
Adrien watched her work.
She ran her fingertips across bindings, checking weight and tension.
Finally she stopped at a large nineteenth-century atlas.
The spine was wrong.
She opened it.
Several pages had been carefully hollowed out.
Inside sat a flash drive.
Marcus exhaled.
“Smart.”
Elena stared at it.
“Vanessa watched me restore this last year.”
“You know her?”
“I met her once. Daniel brought her here.”
That memory now felt grotesque.
Rachel arrived with a secure laptop.
The drive contained spreadsheets, emails, recorded calls, and photographs.
Enough evidence to reconstruct nearly everything.
Daniel and Thomas Reed had spent two years diverting money through Elena’s shell companies.
Victor Sloane provided overseas accounts.
Thomas supplied internal access.
Daniel created the paperwork.
Vanessa initially helped manage communications.
Then she discovered their final plan.
They intended to steal enough money to trigger a federal investigation, direct investigators toward Elena, and disappear overseas.
“But why would Vanessa help them?” Elena asked.
Rachel opened an email.
“Money.”
Vanessa had received $600,000.
Elena felt no satisfaction.
“Then she got scared.”
“Looks that way.”
Adrien studied the records.
“She also started documenting them.”
Marcus was silent.
His brother’s name appeared everywhere.
Elena approached him.
“I'm sorry.”
Marcus looked at her.
“For what?”
“Thomas.”
He stared at the screen.
“He's my little brother.”
The pain in his voice reminded Elena that betrayal spread outward.
Daniel hadn't only destroyed their marriage.
Thomas hadn't only stolen money.
Every selfish decision wounded people standing outside the crime.
Adrien put a hand on Marcus’s shoulder.
“We bring him home alive.”
Marcus nodded.
Then Rachel received a call.
She listened.
“They didn't take off.”
Adrien looked up.
“Why?”
“The flight was delayed.”
“Where are they?”
“Daniel left the airport twenty minutes ago.”
Elena frowned.
“Why?”
Rachel’s expression changed.
“Vanessa.”
“What about her?”
“She never arrived.”
Marcus checked his phone.
“We have a location on Daniel’s car.”
“Where?”
“Downtown.”
Adrien looked at Elena.
“You stay here.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“He's my husband.”
“That's exactly why you stay.”
“You don't get to tell me what to do.”
Adrien’s jaw tightened.
“Someone burned your house last night.”
“And someone spent two years building crimes in my name. I am done sitting outside while men decide what I'm allowed to know.”
The words stopped him.
Elena realized what she had said.
So did Adrien.
His expression softened.
“Fine.”
Marcus almost smiled.
“She's got you there.”
Adrien gave him a look.
“Not helping.”
They tracked Daniel to an underground parking garage.
Vanessa’s car was there.
So was Daniel’s.
Adrien’s men searched the structure.
Elena remained near the elevator with Adrien.
Then they heard shouting.
Vanessa appeared between two concrete columns.
Her makeup was smeared.
Daniel followed.
“Elena!”
Vanessa ran toward her.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
Adrien’s men moved immediately.
“Let her go,” Adrien ordered.
Daniel froze.
He looked exhausted.
His perfect suit was wrinkled. His hair had fallen across his forehead.
For the first time Elena saw him without the image he had spent years constructing.
He looked small.
“Elena, listen to me.”
“No.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“Sloane planned everything.”
“You forged my signature.”
“He forced me.”
“You opened companies in my name.”
“I was protecting us.”
“You planned to put me on a plane.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You told her?”
“I didn't have to,” Elena said. “You recorded yourself.”
Daniel went pale.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You found the drive.”
“Yes.”
Relief flooded her face.
“Thank God.”
Daniel released her.
“You stupid—”
Adrien stepped forward.
Daniel stopped.
Elena looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you help him?”
Tears filled Vanessa’s eyes.
“Because I was greedy.”
No excuses.
“I thought it was financial manipulation. Rich men moving money between companies. Daniel said nobody would get hurt.”
Elena glanced at her husband.
Vanessa continued.
“Then I learned he was using you.”
“And sleeping with you.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
Elena swallowed.
“Did you know he was married?”
“At first, yes.”
The honesty hurt.
“He told me you were separated emotionally. I wanted to believe him.”
“Why?”
“Because believing him made me less ashamed of what I was doing.”
Elena nodded.
It wasn't forgiveness.
But it was truth.
Daniel interrupted.
“Elena, we can still fix this.”
She turned slowly.
“We?”
“Give Vale the drive. I'll return what I can.”
Adrien said, “How generous.”
Daniel ignored him.
“Elena, come with me.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere safe.”
“You mean Switzerland?”
His face hardened.
“I never wanted you hurt.”
“You just wanted me blamed.”
“I needed time.”
“For what?”
“To get out.”
Elena stared at the man she had loved.
“Why me?”
Daniel’s expression faltered.
“You were convenient.”
The words were almost whispered.
But she heard them.
Everyone did.
Something inside Elena finally broke free.
Not her heart.
That had been breaking for years.
Her loyalty.
She removed the chain around her neck.
Daniel’s old college ring hung from it.
He had given it to her before they could afford wedding rings.
She placed it in his palm.
“I spent eight years believing the man you used to be was still somewhere inside you.”
“Elena—”
“He isn't.”
Daniel closed his fingers around the ring.
For one second, genuine grief crossed his face.
Then sirens sounded outside.
Daniel looked toward the ramp.
“Sloane.”
Adrien’s expression sharpened.
Those weren't police sirens.
Black SUVs entered the garage.
Men stepped out.
Marcus reached inside his jacket.
Adrien pulled Elena behind a concrete pillar.
The next minute erupted into chaos.
Shouting.
Tires screeching.
Security men rushing forward.
Elena crouched beside Vanessa.
Adrien remained between them and the approaching threat.
Daniel could have run.
Instead, something unexpected happened.
He looked at Elena.
Then at the vehicles.
“Sloane wants the drive.”
Daniel stepped into the open.
“Daniel!” Elena shouted.
He raised both hands.
“I have it!”
Adrien stared at him.
Daniel looked back once.
“Get her out.”
A vehicle accelerated toward him.
Marcus dragged Daniel aside just before impact.
Adrien’s team closed in.
Within moments, the garage filled with security and arriving police units summoned by Rachel.
Victor Sloane never appeared.
His men fled.
Daniel lay on the concrete, breathing hard.
Marcus stood over him.
“You just saved your wife.”
Daniel looked toward Elena.
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I think that's the first thing I've done for her in years.”
Police approached.
Daniel didn't resist when they handcuffed him.
Elena watched.
He looked at her before being placed inside the cruiser.
“I'm sorry.”
She believed he meant it.
That didn't mean she forgave him.
Vanessa gave investigators a full statement.
The flash drive went to federal authorities.
Thomas was detained at the airport.
By sunset, Elena was officially treated as a victim of identity theft rather than a suspect.
It should have felt like relief.
Instead, she felt empty.
Adrien found her sitting on the steps outside her damaged studio.
“You're free.”
She looked up.
“From prison?”
“From suspicion.”
“What about Daniel?”
“He'll face charges.”
“And Thomas?”
“The same.”
Elena studied him.
“You lost someone too.”
Adrien nodded.
“Marcus lost more.”
She moved slightly.
Adrien sat beside her.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Elena said, “Yesterday morning I was married, had a house, and thought my life was boring.”
“And now?”
“My husband is under arrest, my house burned down, and I'm sitting beside a man people are afraid to name.”
Adrien glanced at her.
“Improvement?”
She laughed.
Actually laughed.
Then the laughter turned into tears.
Elena covered her face.
Adrien didn't touch her.
Didn't tell her to stop.
Didn't promise everything would be fine.
He simply remained there.
When Elena finally lowered her hands, she whispered, “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For opening the door.”
Adrien looked at her for a long moment.
“You were always capable of walking through it.”
Before Elena could answer, Marcus came outside.
His expression was grim.
“Adrien.”
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“Sloane?”
Marcus shook his head.
“The federal team traced the stolen money.”
“Good.”
“No.”
Marcus handed Adrien his phone.
“They found another account.”
Adrien read the screen.
His face changed.
Elena stood.
“What?”
Adrien looked at her.
“The account isn't in your name.”
“Whose?”
He hesitated.
Then answered.
May you like
“Mine.”
And according to the records, Adrien Vale himself had authorized every transfer.
