Chapter 3 - The Life Daniel Built in Her Name

Elena heard footsteps approaching the door.
Adrien reacted before she did.
He took her gently by the elbow and guided her around the corner into a darkened library.
The office door opened seconds later.
Daniel stepped into the corridor.
“Someone was out here.”
Vanessa appeared behind him.
“You're imagining things.”
“No.”
Daniel walked toward the ballroom.
Elena stood motionless in the library, listening until his footsteps disappeared.
Adrien released her arm immediately.
“Sorry.”
“For what?”
“Touching you without asking.”
The fact that he apologized for something so small, while her own husband had apparently built a financial trap around her, almost made Elena laugh.
Instead, she whispered, “What missing money?”
Adrien looked through the doorway before answering.
“About eleven million dollars.”
Her face went blank.
“Eleven million?”
“From several companies connected to me.”
“You think Daniel stole it?”
“I think Daniel knows where it went.”
“And my name?”
“That concerns me more.”
Elena sank into a leather chair.
For years, Daniel had handled their finances.
He told her it made sense because he was an accountant.
She had trusted him.
“How could he open an account in my name?”
“With enough personal information, forged documents, and access to your signature? Easier than you'd like to believe.”
“I sign tax papers.”
Adrien’s expression sharpened.
“What kind?”
“I don't know. Daniel puts tabs where I need to sign.”
“When?”
“Every year.”
Adrien cursed softly.
Elena looked at him.
“You think I've been signing something else.”
“I think we need evidence before we decide anything.”
“We?”
“You heard them mention my money.”
“And?”
“And now our problems overlap.”
She stood.
“I don't want protection from a mafia boss.”
Adrien’s eyebrow lifted.
“Who called me a mafia boss?”
“Everyone.”
“Everyone is dramatic.”
“You have armed men guarding a mansion.”
“So do some senators.”
Despite everything, Elena laughed.
It escaped before she could stop it.
Adrien’s expression softened.
Then the library door opened.
Daniel stood there.
His eyes moved from Elena to Adrien.
“What are you doing?”
Elena faced him.
“Talking.”
“I told you we needed to leave.”
“No. You told me to wait outside.”
“Elena—”
“What account did you open in my name?”
Daniel froze.
It lasted less than a second.
But Elena saw it.
“What are you talking about?”
“The account Vanessa mentioned.”
His gaze flicked toward Adrien.
There it was again.
Fear.
Daniel stepped inside and closed the door.
“You were listening to a private conversation?”
“You were discussing me.”
“You misunderstood.”
“Then explain it.”
Daniel exhaled.
“There are investment accounts attached to our household finances.”
“Eleven million dollars?”
His face changed.
Adrien leaned against a bookshelf.
Interesting.
Elena saw Daniel realize his mistake.
“I didn't say eleven million.”
“No,” she said. “Adrien did.”
Daniel looked at Adrien.
“You have no right involving my wife in business that doesn't concern her.”
Adrien’s voice became quiet.
“You put business in her name. That makes it concern her.”
Daniel turned pale.
“I haven't done anything illegal.”
“Good,” Adrien said. “Then you won't mind showing Elena every account carrying her name.”
Daniel said nothing.
Elena’s heart broke with each second of silence.
“Show me.”
“We'll discuss this at home.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“Show me now.”
His patience snapped.
“For God's sake, stop acting like you understand any of this.”
The words filled the library.
Elena stared at him.
Daniel continued.
“This is exactly why I didn't want you inside. You hear half a conversation and suddenly you're creating some ridiculous conspiracy.”
Adrien straightened.
But Elena raised a hand.
She didn't need him to defend her.
“Why didn't you want me inside, Daniel?”
“I told you.”
“Because I embarrass you?”
Daniel looked away.
That hurt more than an answer.
Elena nodded slowly.
“Fine. Let's say that's true. Explain Vanessa.”
“She's a colleague.”
“Are you sleeping with her?”
Silence.
Elena had expected anger.
Denial.
Something.
Daniel gave her nothing.
Her voice became softer.
“Are you sleeping with her?”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“It isn't that simple.”
Eight years ended inside those four words.
Elena looked at her wedding ring.
Then pulled it off.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Elena, don't be dramatic.”
She placed the ring on the table between them.
“I waited outside because my husband was ashamed of me. Then I discovered he's cheating on me and possibly using my name to hide millions of dollars. I think I've earned a little drama.”
She walked toward the door.
Daniel caught her wrist.
“Don't.”
Adrien moved instantly.
“Take your hand off her.”
Daniel looked at him.
Something in Adrien’s voice convinced him.
He released Elena.
She walked into the ballroom.
For the first time since arriving, she wanted to leave.
But she no longer had a car.
Daniel had the keys.
Adrien followed.
“I'll have someone drive you home.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“I don't know you.”
“Fair.”
“And if Daniel really stole from you, helping me isn't exactly charity.”
“Also fair.”
She turned.
“Then why are you helping?”
Adrien considered the question.
“Because somebody left you outside my house as though you were something to hide.”
“That bothered you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
His expression changed.
“Because I've seen it before.”
He didn't elaborate.
Elena didn't ask.
Marcus approached.
“Adrien.”
His tone was different.
Business.
Urgent.
Adrien stepped aside with him.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“We checked the shell-company records again. Carter Holdings transferred $3.8 million into an account registered to Elena Carter six months ago.”
Elena heard her name.
Adrien glanced at her.
“What else?”
“Another seven point four passed through two companies where she's listed as managing member.”
Adrien’s jaw tightened.
“Does she own them?”
“According to the documents.”
“I don't own companies,” Elena said.
Marcus looked at her.
“Mrs. Carter?”
“I restore books in a twelve-hundred-square-foot studio. I definitely don't own companies moving millions of dollars.”
Marcus looked back at Adrien.
“There's more.”
“What?”
“The authorization signatures match hers.”
Elena felt sick.
Daniel had used her signatures.
Adrien asked, “Where is the money now?”
“Mostly gone.”
“Gone where?”
“We're tracing it.”
Elena sat down.
The room continued around her.
Music.
Laughter.
Crystal glasses.
Nobody knew her entire life had just cracked open.
Adrien crouched slightly beside her chair.
“Elena.”
She looked at him.
“Am I going to prison?”
“No.”
“You don't know that.”
“No,” he admitted. “But I know you're going to have the chance to prove what happened.”
“What if I can't?”
“Then we'll find someone who can.”
“We?”
Adrien nodded toward Marcus.
“My people.”
“Your people think I stole from you.”
“They did.”
“And now?”
“Now I don't.”
“How can you be sure?”
Adrien looked toward Daniel.
“Because guilty people usually run from me.”
Daniel was standing across the ballroom.
Watching them.
“And your husband,” Adrien continued, “isn't watching me.”
Elena followed his gaze.
Daniel was staring at her.
“He's watching you.”
Daniel suddenly pulled out his phone.
Marcus’s phone buzzed almost simultaneously.
He checked it.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“Carter just ordered a car.”
Adrien looked toward the entrance.
Daniel started moving.
“Elena,” Adrien said, “did Daniel keep financial records at your house?”
“Yes.”
“Computers?”
“A laptop. Files in his office.”
“Could anything prove he forged your signatures?”
“Maybe.”
Daniel reached the doors.
Adrien looked at Marcus.
“Don't let him leave.”
Marcus moved.
But Vanessa stepped directly into Elena’s path.
“You need to stop.”
Elena stared at her.
“Excuse me?”
“You have no idea what you're doing.”
“I know you slept with my husband.”
Vanessa flinched.
“I didn't plan that.”
“How comforting.”
“Daniel told me your marriage was over.”
“It is now.”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“You don't understand. Daniel isn't doing this alone.”
Elena stopped.
“What?”
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Daniel was arguing with Marcus.
“He got involved with people two years ago. They started using his clients to move money.”
“Who?”
“I don't know all their names.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No. But believe this: if they think Daniel is exposed, they'll destroy everything connected to him.”
Vanessa looked directly at Elena.
“Including you.”
A crash sounded near the entrance.
Daniel shoved past Marcus.
Two security guards moved.
Adrien’s voice cut through the room.
“Let him go.”
Everyone stopped.
Daniel looked back.
Adrien stared at him calmly.
“If you leave tonight, Carter, don't come back.”
Daniel laughed nervously.
“You think I care?”
“No.”
Adrien’s gaze shifted to Elena.
“But I think you care about what your wife finds before you can get home.”
Daniel’s face transformed.
He ran.
Elena understood immediately.
“The files.”
Adrien was already moving.
“Marcus, car.”
They reached the driveway as Daniel’s sedan disappeared through the gates.
Elena looked at Adrien.
“He's going home to destroy everything.”
“Probably.”
“My house is forty minutes away.”
“Not tonight.”
A black SUV pulled forward.
Adrien opened the passenger door.
Elena hesitated.
“You really expect me to get into a car with you?”
“No.”
“What?”
“I expect you to decide whether you want the truth badly enough to take a risk.”
Elena looked at the disappearing taillights.
Then at the mansion where her marriage had just collapsed.
She got in.
Adrien joined her.
Marcus drove.
Twenty-eight minutes later, they turned onto Elena’s street.
Smoke was already rising above the trees.
“No,” Elena whispered.
They rounded the corner.
Flames poured from the second-floor windows of the Carter house.
Firefighters were arriving.
Neighbors stood in the street.
Elena jumped from the SUV before it fully stopped.
“My house!”
Adrien caught up.
“Elena, wait.”
“My records are in there.”
“So is a fire.”
She stopped on the sidewalk.
Eight years of photographs, furniture, birthday cards, books, clothes, and memories burned behind the windows.
Daniel stood near the curb.
Watching.
Elena stared at him.
“You did this.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“You came straight here.”
“I came because somebody called me.”
“Who?”
He didn't answer.
A firefighter ran from the house carrying a metal lockbox.
“We found this in the basement.”
Daniel’s face went white.
Elena noticed.
So did Adrien.
The firefighter set the smoke-blackened box on the lawn.
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“That belongs to me.”
Elena moved between him and the box.
“No.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Move.”
She didn't.
For eight years, Elena had moved whenever Daniel wanted more space.
Changed plans when his work mattered more.
Made herself smaller when his ambitions grew.
Not anymore.
“If my name is on anything inside that box,” she said, “you don't touch it.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you're starting.”
Elena looked at the burning house behind him.
“No, Daniel.”
She glanced at Adrien, then back at the man she had once trusted more than anyone.
“I think you started it.”
And when the firefighter forced open the damaged lockbox, the first thing Elena saw inside was a passport with her photograph.
A passport she had never seen before.
Beside it sat a plane ticket.
One way.
May you like
To Switzerland.
For the following morning.
