Chapter 5 - The War for Chicago

BANG!

A gunshot shattered the heavy oak doors of the Moretti estate in South Chicago!

Adrian Bellandi stepped through the splintered wood, flanked by Marcus and twelve heavily armed guards. The foyer was littered with Moretti’s men who had tried to block the entrance.

Adrian walked like a demon through hell. His coat was dusted with plaster, his face covered in blood splatters, his grey eyes burning with an apocalyptic fury.

"MORETTI!" Adrian roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandeliers above.

From the top of the grand staircase, Elena Russo ran out, her hands shaking, her face pale as snow.

"Adrian!" Elena shrieked, cowering behind the marble railing. "Stop! Please! They lied to me! Moretti promised he wouldn't hurt anyone—"

Adrian didn't even look up at her. He fired two shots into the ceiling above her head, sending marble dust showering over her silk dress.

"Where is my wife, Elena?!" Adrian spat, his voice raspy with fury.

"She’s not here!" Elena wept, dropping to her knees. "Moretti went to get her! His informants tracked her to a bank on LaSalle Street!"

Adrian’s heart stopped.

LaSalle Street. The Sterling family vault.

"Marcus!" Adrian yelled, turning on his heel. "To LaSalle Street! NOW!"

Before they could reach the exit, a convoy of federal vehicles screeched to a halt outside the estate! Blue and red lights flashed through the shattered windows. Armed FBI tactical teams poured out of the vans, weapons raised!

"FEDs!" Marcus yelled, drawing his weapon. "Boss, we have to move!"

"NO!" Adrian shouted. "Don't fire on the feds!"

A senior agent stepped into the ruined foyer, holding a megaphone.

"Adrian Bellandi! Stand down! This property is under federal seizure!"

Adrian stepped forward, his hands raised slightly, his eyes frantic. "Agent! My wife is in danger! Vincent Moretti has her at the LaSalle National Bank!"

The agent looked at Adrian with a strange, almost amused expression.

"Mr. Bellandi," the agent said calmly. "You might want to check the news."

The agent pulled out a tablet and turned it toward Adrian.

On the screen, a live news broadcast showed the exterior of the LaSalle National Bank.

Dozens of police cars surrounded the building. But Vincent Moretti wasn't holding Claire hostage.

On the screen, Vincent Moretti was being led out of the bank in handcuffs by federal agents! Beside him, two of his top lieutenants were pinned to the pavement by tactical officers!

And walking down the stone steps of the bank, completely untouched, wearing her dark wool coat, was Claire Bellandi.

She was flanked by the Chief of the Chicago FBI Field Office and the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

She wasn't a victim. She wasn't a helpless hostage. She was standing at the microphones, delivering an official statement as the key witness in a massive federal indictment that had just dismantled the entire Moretti crime family in a single hour.

Adrian stared at the screen, his mouth slightly open, his mind completely reeling.

"She didn't just escape Moretti, Mr. Bellandi," the FBI agent said softly. "She handed us twenty years of Moretti’s financial evidence that her father had collected. She set a trap for Moretti the moment he walked into that vault."

Adrian stared at the image of his wife on the screen. She looked stunning, powerful, majestic—a queen who didn't need a king to defend her throne.

And in that moment, Adrian realized with absolute, painful clarity that he didn't just love Claire. He revered her.

And he was going to spend the rest of his life earning the right to stand beside her again.
