Chapter 4 - The Game Begins

While Adrian was riding toward the south side of Chicago with a convoy of four armored SUVs, Claire was sitting in a quiet corner of the Continental Bank vault on LaSalle Street.

The clerk had left her alone in the small private viewing room.

On the table sat a metal box. Claire opened it with her silver key. Inside lay thick files, flash drives, and a series of original deeds to properties across Illinois and Indiana.

This was her father’s legacy—and her ultimate insurance policy.

Arthur Sterling had spent twenty years gathering evidence against every major criminal family in the Midwest. When he died, he left the vault key to his eighteen-year-old daughter with a simple instruction: Never use this unless you are forced into a corner with no way out.

Claire picked up a black flash drive labeled PROJECT APEX.

She plugged it into her encrypted laptop.

Files opened across the screen—names, offshore account numbers, shell companies, and recorded audio files from wiretaps conducted ten years ago.

Among the files was a fresh folder that Claire had been quietly compiling herself over the last five years.

She opened it.

It didn't contain dirt on her husband. Despite everything, Claire had never collected evidence against Adrian. She had loved him too deeply to destroy him.

Instead, the folder contained full financial dossiers on Vincent Moretti and Elena Russo.

Claire wasn't stupid. Three weeks before Elena arrived at the estate, Claire had noticed strange movement in the Bellandi financial ledgers—subtle irregularities in the northern water front distribution lines that pointed directly to an insider leak. She had quietly hired her own private intelligence agency in New York to run a trace.

She had known Elena was coming before Adrian even brought her up at the dinner table.

She had agreed to let Elena stay not because she was a weak, submissive wife, but because she wanted to see how far Elena and Moretti would go.

What she hadn't expected... was for Adrian to let Elena touch him.

That kiss had broken something delicate inside Claire’s chest. But it hadn't broken her intelligence.

"You thought you were playing a game of chess, Elena," Claire murmured, staring at the screen as she uploaded the financial files to an anonymous server connected to the Department of Justice. "You forgot that I wrote the rules."

Suddenly, the lights in the vault room flickered.

A heavy metallic click echoed from the heavy steel door of the viewing room.

Claire instantly slammed her laptop shut. Her hand reached inside her coat pocket, wrapping around the small, compact revolver she had retrieved from her condo safe an hour ago.

The heavy steel door slid open.

Two men in dark suits stepped into the room. Behind them stood a man in a tailored grey suit with a silver walking cane.

Vincent Moretti.

"Mrs. Bellandi," Moretti said, offering a slow, wolfish smile. "I must admit, my men had a hell of a time tracking you. Who would have thought the queen of the Bellandi empire was hiding in an old bank vault on LaSalle Street?"

Claire didn't flinch. She sat back in her chair, her grip tight on the revolver inside her pocket, her blue eyes as cold as glass.

"Vincent," Claire said smoothly. "You're looking remarkably well for a man whose kidney failure is supposed to kill him before Christmas."

Moretti’s smile faded slightly, his dark eyes narrowing. "You always had a sharp tongue, Arthur Sterling’s daughter. Just like your father."

"My father almost put you in a federal prison," Claire replied calmly. "And you are standing in a bank vault equipped with silent panic buttons under every table. In two minutes, federal marshals will surround this block."

Moretti chuckled—a dry, rattling sound. "The panic buttons were disabled when my men walked into the building, my dear. The manager owes me three million dollars in gambling debts. You are coming with me."

"Why?" Claire asked, her tone entirely unbothered. "To use me as leverage against Adrian?"

"Of course," Moretti said, leaning on his cane. "Adrian Bellandi is a beast. Untouchable, ruthless, calculating. But he has one weakness: you. With you in my hands, he will sign over his shipping docks and retire to Italy. And if he refuses... well, I’ll send you back to him in a box."

Claire looked at the old mob boss. Then, to his utter shock, she let out a quiet, elegant laugh.

"Vincent," Claire said, leaning forward. "You really are an idiot. You think Adrian is coming to save me?"

"He’s hunting the city for you right now," Moretti sneered.

"He’s hunting the city because he feels guilty," Claire corrected coldly. "I left him. He doesn't own me anymore. And if you think using me as a hostage will make him surrender, you don't understand how Adrian Bellandi operates when he has nothing left to lose."

She stood up slowly, bringing her hands out of her pockets—her revolver pointed straight at Vincent Moretti’s forehead.

"Now," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of pure, lethal command. "Tell your men to step back before I put a bullet between your eyes."
