Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

“I built this empire for us!” Grant yelled, his composure slipping completely. “Twenty-four years, Claire! I gave you this house! I gave you a life most women in this country could only dream of!”

“You gave me a golden cage, Grant,” Claire corrected softly, her voice rising with a controlled, intense emotion that made Grant freeze. “You gave me a life where I had to ask permission to host a charity dinner. A life where you looked at me every evening and made me feel like I was aging out of your world. A life where you brought a girl younger than our marriage into public view just to remind me I was replaceable.”

Grant stepped closer, his voice dropping into a desperate plead. “I made a mistake with Madison! It was meaningless, Claire! You know how stress affects me—I was lost!”

“You weren’t lost, Grant. You were vain,” she said flatly.

At that moment, heavy footsteps sounded from the library hallway.

Ethan Mercer stepped out, wearing a simple navy sweater and jeans. He didn't look angry; he looked calmly authoritative as he stepped smoothly between Grant and Claire, placing himself directly in Grant’s path.

“That’s enough, Whitmore,” Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the sharp weight of a man who didn't make empty threats. “You’re trespassing on private property.”

Grant glared at Ethan, his jaw clenching. “This is between me and my ex-wife, Mercer. Stay out of it.”

“Claire is my fiancée,” Ethan replied calmly. “And this estate belongs entirely to her. If you don’t turn around and walk back to your car in the next thirty seconds, I won’t wait until Friday to foreclose on Riverfront. I’ll trigger the acceleration clause on your Long Island mortgages by six o'clock tonight.”

Grant stared at Ethan, then looked past his shoulder at Claire. She wasn't looking at Grant; she had turned her back to him, gently placing her hand over her baby’s kick.

She didn't need him. She didn't fear him. She had completely moved on.

Grant felt a cold, terrifying emptiness open inside his chest. Without another word, he turned on his heel and walked out into the pouring rain.
