Chapter 4 - The Connecticut Estate

Rain pounded against the windshield of Grant’s Bentley as he sped up the Merritt Parkway toward Bedford, Connecticut.
It was a reckless move. His lawyers had explicitly warned him not to approach Claire without a formal legal request. But Grant was drowning. In four days, Ethan Mercer was going to strip him of his flagship construction project—the project that carried his family name—and Grant knew Ethan wasn't doing it just for profit.
It was personal.
At 4:30 PM, the Bentley pulled up to the heavy wrought-iron gates of the thirty-acre estate in Bedford. Grant pressed the intercom button.
“Yes?” a woman’s voice came through the speaker. It was Mrs. Gable, the long-time housekeeper Grant had hired a decade ago.
“Mrs. Gable, it’s Grant. Open the gate.”
“Mr. Whitmore? I… I can’t do that without Mrs. Mercer’s permission.”
Mrs. Mercer. The name hit Grant like a physical blow.
“She isn’t Mrs. Mercer yet,” Grant snarled into the speaker. “Open the gate, or I’ll drive through it.”
Ten seconds later, the gates swung open slowly.
Grant parked in the gravel driveway in front of the stone Georgian manor. He stepped out into the drizzle, charging up the front steps. He didn't knock; he used his old key code on the digital pad.
The door unlocked with a soft click.
Inside, the grand entrance hall was completely transformed. The heavy, dark oil paintings and masculine antiques Grant had insisted on during their marriage were gone. In their place were bright, contemporary artworks, warm oak furniture, and soft cream fabrics. Light flooded the space.
Standing near the grand staircase was Claire. She wore a soft gray cashmere sweater that hugged her swollen belly, holding a mug of warm tea.
“You haven’t changed, Grant,” she said quietly, her voice echoing in the bright foyer. “Still breaking into places where you’re no longer invited.”
Grant stopped ten feet away, breathing heavily. “He’s taking my company, Claire.”
Claire took a slow sip of her tea, completely unfazed by his outburst. “Ethan isn’t taking anything you didn’t offer up through sloppy management and arrogant over-leveraging.”

“Don’t pretend you don’t know about this!” Grant shouted, pacing the marble floor. “He bought my Frankfurt debt this morning! He’s using his money to crush me because of you!”
Claire looked at him with profound disappointment. “Grant, Ethan is a businessman. He saw an underperforming asset with terrible leadership and bought the debt. He didn’t do it because of me. He did it because you built a empire on sand while trying to impress twenty-year-olds.”
