Chapter 2 - The Woman Whose Name Was Written in a Dead Man’s JournalThe old Whitmore house sat at the edge of Greyhaven beneath a canopy of oak trees.

Evelyn hadn't been there since her grandmother died.

She remembered the porch.

The rocking chair.

The smell of cinnamon.

But she had never remembered the house feeling secretive.

Now, with Dominic walking beside her, every locked door looked suspicious.

“You've been here before,” she said.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Twenty-four years ago.”

She stopped.

“How old were you?”

“Twenty-three.”

“Why were you here?”

Dominic looked toward the house.

“My brother.”

Evelyn swallowed.

“What happened?”

“He disappeared.”

They entered through the back door.

Dust covered the furniture.

A sheet concealed the piano.

Evelyn stared.

“That piano belonged to my grandmother.”

Dominic touched the edge.

“Gabriel played.”

She frowned.

“My grandmother told me he did.”

“Did she tell you why he stopped?”

“No.”

Dominic walked to the piano.

He lifted the bench.

Inside was nothing.

Then Evelyn noticed a small brass key taped beneath the seat.

She pulled it free.

“What does this open?”

Dominic examined it.

“A drawer.”

“Which one?”

He pointed toward a desk.

The key fit.

The drawer opened.

Inside was a leather journal.

The name on the first page:

Gabriel Valtieri.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

She turned the pages.

The writing was neat.

Almost painfully so.

The first entries were ordinary.

Shipping numbers.

Addresses.

Names.

Then the tone changed.

Claire knows.

Father wants her gone.

Dominic doesn't understand what our family has become.

Evelyn's eyes filled.

She kept reading.

Gabriel wrote about meeting Claire.

About falling in love with her.

About discovering that she was carrying his child.

About trying to escape.

Then:

If the baby is a girl, she cannot know who I am until it is safe.

Evelyn touched the page.

“Me.”

Dominic nodded.

“Your mother knew you were in danger.”

“She left me with my grandmother.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Gabriel was killed.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You said he disappeared.”

“I didn't know the truth until now.”

She turned the page.

Another entry.

Father says Claire betrayed him. She didn't. She found the medical accounts. Holloway is involved.

Evelyn stared.

Grant Holloway's name appeared again.

Then another.

Dr. Walter Kline.

She recognized it.

Kline was the chief medical officer of St. Catherine's Hospital.

He had supervised her first ICU rotation.

“He is still alive,” she whispered.

Dominic nodded.

“He's one of the richest doctors in the region.”

Evelyn looked up.

“He signed some of the reports I found.”

“So he is inside.”

“Yes.”

She kept reading.

Gabriel described a meeting.

He had discovered that Holloway Medical Logistics was moving drugs from hospitals into private distribution networks.

Patients were dying.

Whistleblowers disappeared.

Gabriel tried to expose it.

His father stopped him.

Then came the final entry.

September 13. Claire is leaving tonight. I will take her and our daughter north.

Evelyn's hand shook.

The next line was smudged.

The final sentence was clear.

If I die, give my daughter the bracelet. Tell her the compass points home.

Evelyn touched the silver charm.

She cried.

Dominic stood beside her without speaking.

After a while she asked:

“Why did you never tell me?”

“I didn't know you existed.”

“Until now.”

“Yes.”

He hesitated.

“Your face.”

“What about it?”

“I saw your mother in you.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“What happened to her?”

Dominic didn't answer.

She realized.

“You don't know.”

“I found her file.”

“And?”

“Missing.”

“She could be alive.”

“Yes.”

Hope and fear collided inside her.

Then she noticed another page.

Someone had written a name in red.

MORGAN REED.

She knew it.

The head nurse from the ICU.

Evelyn stared.

“Morgan.”

“What?”

“She helped me.”

Dominic's expression hardened.

“She helped you?”

“Yes.”

“She had access to your medical records?”

“Everything.”

“Then she may be the leak.”

Evelyn's stomach dropped.

They returned to the estate.

Morgan called.

“I heard you're safe.”

Evelyn frowned.

“How did you know?”

“I heard about the attack.”

“From whom?”

Silence.

Then Morgan said:

“Evelyn, you need to trust me.”

Dominic took the phone.

“You have ten seconds.”

Morgan hung up.

Dominic stared at the screen.

“She's gone.”

Evelyn understood.

“She knew.”

A security officer entered.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“We found the vehicle used in the attack.”

“Where?”

“Behind St. Catherine's.”

Dominic looked at Evelyn.

The hospital.

Of course.

She had trusted the wrong institution.

They drove there.

The ICU floor was almost empty.

Morgan wasn't there.

But her office was unlocked.

Inside was a box.

Evelyn opened it.

Photographs.

Her.

Dominic.

Her grandmother.

Gabriel.

Claire.

And a newborn baby.

Evelyn stared.

“That baby is me.”

Dominic looked at the photograph.

Then at the woman holding the baby.

Claire.

Alive.

The photograph was recent.

“Where was this taken?”

He turned it over.

One address.

A farm outside Greyhaven.

Evelyn whispered:

“My mother.”

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot cracked somewhere down the hallway.

Dominic pulled Evelyn behind him.

“Stay down.”

Another shot.

A security guard fell.

Dominic drew his weapon.

Evelyn whispered:

“Who?”

May you like

He looked into the darkness.

“Someone who knows exactly where we are.”
