Chapter 8 - The Midnight Confrontation

At 1:30 AM, the mansion was dark, silent, and suffocatingly still.
Vivien Cole paced back and forth in the master suite, her face pale, her knuckles white as she re-read the news alert on her tablet screen.
BREAKING: MARGARET WHITMORE REGAINS CONSCIOUSNESS; POLICE STATEMENT EXPECTED AT DAWN.
Panic, icy and visceral, tore through her veins. If Margaret spoke to the police, it was over. The fraud, the debt, the attempted murder—she would spend the rest of her life in a federal penitentiary.
She grabbed a small silk scarf, wrapping it around her hands, and pulled a key card from her drawer. She needed to destroy the original prenuptial redline documents sitting in Nathaniel’s study before the police served a search warrant on the estate.
Stealthily, she slipped out of the master bedroom, creeping down the dark, carpeted corridor toward the library.
The door to the library was slightly ajar. A warm, faint glow emanated from inside.
Vivien pushed the door open quietly, stepping into the room.
Sitting in the massive high-backed leather chair behind the desk was Nathaniel. He wasn't working. He was simply sitting in the dark, waiting for her.
On the desk in front of him sat a small digital voice recorder, its small red light blinking rhythmically in the darkness.
"You're up late, Vivien," Nathaniel said smoothly, his voice slicing through the stillness of the room.
Vivien froze, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She tried to force a calm expression onto her face, but her hands trembled beneath her silk scarf.
"Nathaniel..." she stammered, stepping back toward the door. "I... I saw the news update about your mother. I couldn't sleep. I wanted to see if you were alright."
"My mother is awake, Vivien," Nathaniel said, standing up slowly from his chair, his tall frame casting a long, ominous shadow across the room. "She remembers everything. She remembers you taking her cane. She remembers you pushing her."
Vivien’s face drained of all color. The polished mask she had worn for three years shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.
"She’s lying!" Vivien shrieked, her voice cracking with sudden, hysterical rage. "She hated me from the day I walked into this house! She was going to ruin everything, Nathaniel! My family, my reputation, my life! I offered you everything! I would have made you unstoppable!"

"You tried to kill my mother for a voting share in a logistics company," Nathaniel said, taking a slow step toward her, his eyes devoid of any human warmth.
"She deserved it!" Vivien screamed, completely losing control, stepping into the trap with blind, frantic desperation. "She stood at the top of those stairs and called me a penniless leech! She was going to tear up the agreement! I had to do it, Nathaniel! I did it for us!"
