Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Library

Within thirty minutes, the atmosphere inside the Whitmore estate had fundamentally shifted.

Nathaniel brought Rosa and Lily into his private, soundproof library, locking the heavy mahogany doors behind them. He sat Rosa down in a leather armchair, giving her a glass of water while Lily sat on the rug, distracted with a set of brass paperweights.

"Tell me everything, Rosa," Nathaniel commanded, sitting opposite her. "From the beginning."

Rosa took a shaky breath and recounted the entire afternoon—Lily’s confession in the laundry room, Vivien’s suspicious visit, and the subtle threats made against her job and her daughter.

"She knew Lily was near the stairs," Rosa said, wiping a tear from her cheek. "She threatened to ruin us if I said anything. Mr. Nathaniel, your mother didn't slip. Ms. Vivien grabbed her cane, pulled it out of her hand, and pushed her backward."

Nathaniel stared into the glowing embers of the fireplace, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheek twitched. The betrayal was complete. The woman he had intended to make his wife was a cold-blooded attempted murderer who had tried to silence a child.

"You and Lily are safe, Rosa," Nathaniel said, his voice cold as iron. "You are not losing your job, and you are not leaving this house. But I need your help to make sure she never hurts anyone again."

"What are you going to do?" Rosa asked, fear still lingering in her eyes.

"The police won't arrest a prominent socialite based solely on the testimony of a three-year-old child," Nathaniel explained, his analytical mind executing a cold, tactical strategy. "Vivien’s lawyers would destroy your credibility in court. We need a confession. And I am going to make her give it to me."

He pulled out his phone and dialed Harrison’s direct line.

"Harrison," Nathaniel said into the receiver. "Call the hospital. Tell them to issue an official medical update to the press in one hour. State that my mother has regained full consciousness, that her memory of the fall is completely intact, and that she is making a sworn statement to the district attorney at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."

On the other end of the line, Harrison gasped. "Nathaniel... that will provoke her."

"That’s the point," Nathaniel replied, his eyes burning with lethal intent. "A trapped animal always makes a mistake."
