Chapter 9 - Stepping Out of the Shadows

The transition didn't happen overnight, but when the spring rains finally gave way to the warm, golden sunshine of early summer, the atmosphere inside the Moretti penthouse had transformed entirely.

The cold, sterile minimalism softened. Fresh flowers from local markets filled the crystal vases on the marble tables, and the heavy security presence was dialed back to a discreet, professional perimeter that no longer felt like a prison guard detail.

My brother Mateo received a full, unannounced academic scholarship grant funded through a anonymous educational trust managed by the Moretti Foundation, allowing him to focus entirely on his final year at Northwestern without the crushing weight of financial panic. My mother was transferred to a top-tier private care facility with dedicated specialists who finally got her chronic condition under control.

And me?

I didn't carry a silver serving tray anymore. But every morning at exactly 7:00, I stood in the sunlit kitchen, brewing a rich, aromatic blend of coffee.

Only now, I didn't leave it on a silent tray outside a closed door.

One morning, as I walked into the master study carrying two steaming porcelain mugs, Dante looked up from a stack of architectural blueprints spread across his ebony desk. He wore a crisp white shirt with the top buttons open, his dark hair slightly tousled by the morning breeze drifting in from the open balcony doors.

He smiled—a rare, completely unguarded smile that made the harsh angles of his face soften entirely.

“You’re late by thirty seconds,” Dante teased lightly, taking the mug from my hand.

“Traffic on the balcony was terrible,” I retorted with a grin, leaning my hip against the edge of his desk.

He set his mug down, reached out, and pulled me gently onto his lap, burying his face in the crook of my neck as his arms wrapped securely around my waist. I let out a soft sigh, resting my fingers in his dark hair, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart against mine.

We had survived the wolves, the poison, the glass, and the dark underworld that tried to swallow us whole.

We had stepped out of the shadows together.
