Chapter 8 - The Weight of an Empire

The medical team arrived ten minutes later to check on Valentina, administering an intravenous saline flush and neutralizing agents to clear the lingering toxins from her system. By sunrise, she was resting comfortably in her private suite under the constant care of a trusted personal physician.
I sat alone in the vast, quiet kitchen, staring down at a cold cup of coffee. The adrenaline that had kept my muscles rigid through the confrontation with Celeste had finally drained away, leaving my limbs heavy and aching.
The heavy service door clicked open, and Dante walked in. He had changed into a fresh black shirt, the sleeves still rolled up, revealing the lean, powerful lines of his forearms. He carried a small white first-aid kit in his left hand.
Without a word, he pulled out the wooden chair opposite mine, sat down, and placed the kit on the counter.
“Give me your hand,” he instructed quietly.
“Mr. Moretti—Dante, I’m fine. It’s just a tiny scratch,” I protested, trying to pull my hand back.
He didn't let go. His grip was firm, unbreakable, yet infinitely gentle as he took my fingers in his palm. He took out an antiseptic wipe and carefully cleaned the tiny cut on my palm, then gently scrubbed away the dried blood beneath my fingernails with a sterile cotton swab.
“For six weeks,” Dante said, his eyes fixed on my hand as he worked, “I watched you walk through this house like a ghost. I watched you carry the weight of your family on your shoulders, working yourself to exhaustion just to pay for your brother’s tuition and your mother’s care.”
My breath hitched. “You... you investigated my family?”
“I investigate everyone who steps foot across my threshold,” Dante admitted without a shred of apology. “That’s how I survive. But with you... the more I learned, the more I realized that the cold, hard world I built around myself was the very thing keeping me away from anything real.”
He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an absolute, burning sincerity.
“Celeste is gone. Her family’s contracts have been dissolved, and her stake in the foundation has been seized. She will never step foot in Chicago again.” He paused, his thumb tracing a slow circle against my wrist. “And you... you are no longer a maid in this house, Serena.”

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. “What am I, Dante?”
“Stay with me,” he said, the command wrapped in a raw, desperate plea. “Not as an employee. Not as a guest hiding in the shadows. Stay as my equal. Help me tear down the walls of this museum and turn it into a home.”
