Chapter 35 - The Siege of the Sanctuary

"Upstairs! Breach on the north balcony!" Croft barked into his throat mic, drawing a matte-black Glock from his shoulder holster with blinding speed. "Team Two, secure the child! Team One, stairs!"

Two of Croft’s armed guards surged past me, their weapon-mounted flashlights cutting sharp white beams through the pitch-black hallway.

"Sarah, get behind the kitchen island!" I commanded, shoving my wife behind the reinforced quartz counter. "Stay down! Don't look up, no matter what happens!"

I didn't carry a firearm, but my father Arthur had taught me how to handle steel when I was young. I pulled a heavy, carbon-steel tactical survival knife from the emergency pack beside the pantry and followed Croft toward the central staircase.

Above us, the darkness erupted into violence.

Two muffled gunshots—suppressed, coughing cracks—echoed down the stairwell, followed by the dull sound of a heavy body hitting the floor.

"Security team one down!" a voice screamed through Croft’s earpiece. "These aren't local enforcers! It’s a private military contractor! They have night optics and flashbangs—"

A blinding flash of magnesium light illuminated the top of the stairs, instantly accompanied by a concussive boom that rattled my teeth in my skull and threw me against the banister. My ears rang with a high-pitched, deafening whine. The world turned into a silent, slow-motion nightmare of gray smoke and jagged shadows.

Through the haze, a figure emerged at the landing.

He was dressed in dark tactical gear, carrying a short-barreled carbine, but he wasn't firing wildly. He moved with methodical, lethal efficiency. Behind him, another figure stood in the shadows—not a mercenary, but an old man in a long wool overcoat, leaning calmly on a polished ebony cane with an ivory handle.

Victor Harlan.

Even through the smoke and the ringing in my ears, I recognized him instantly. The jawline, the piercing gray eyes, the arrogant, calculating tilt of his chin—it was like looking at my own face thirty years from now, stripped of every ounce of human mercy.

"David," Harlan's voice cut through the lingering smoke, deep, cultured, and devoid of fear. "You have your mother’s stubborn pride, but you lack Arthur’s discipline. Put the knife down before my people have to put you in the floor."

"Where is my daughter?" I snarled, stepping up onto the first step, my fingers gripping the knife until the metal bit into my palm.

"She is asleep in the guest room," Harlan said casually, tapping his cane against the hardwood step. "My men used a mild sedative aerosol through the upper ventilation intake. She didn't feel a thing. In ten minutes, she will wake up in the back of my vehicle, entirely unharmed."

"Touch her, and I'll carve your throat out," I whispered, the rage burning away the concussive fog in my brain.

"Touch her?" Harlan let out a short, dry chuckle that chilled me to the marrow. "David, she is my flesh and blood. You are my son. Arthur Vance was a pathetic, self-righteous bureaucrat who stole my life, stole my wife, and spent forty years laundering my money into trust structures he thought I couldn't reach."

Harlan took one slow step down the stairs. The tactical operative beside him kept his carbine leveled squarely at my chest.

"You did the one thing Arthur spent his entire life trying to prevent," Harlan continued, a cruel smile touching the corners of his thin lips. "You dissolved the federal escrow barriers. You centralized the entire eighty-four million dollars into a private custodial trust for Emma. And as her legal next of kin under the revised biological lineage filings Eleanor signed, I am now her lawful conservator."

"The court won't honor that," Marcus Finch called out from the darkness near the foyer, his voice shaking but clear. "The adoption was ratified under federal seal! It cannot be overturned by an emergency state filing!"

Harlan didn't even look at Marcus. "The federal seal was based on Arthur's affidavit that the biological father was deceased. Arthur committed perjury thirty-two years ago, Mr. Finch. I am very much alive. And the state courts have already issued a temporary protection order granting me physical custody until the federal courts review the fraud."

Harlan looked back down at me, his eyes gleaming like polished granite.

May you like

"Step aside, David. Let me take Emma to the car. If you fight, my contractor will shoot you through the chest, claim you were an armed lunatic resisting a lawful court order, and I will raise your daughter to despise your memory—just like Arthur raised you to despise mine."
