Chapter 34 - Perimeter Compromised

The sun dipped behind the western ridge of the Blue Ridge mountains, casting long, bruised shadows across the valley.

Within two hours of Julian Croft’s revelations, four unmarked black SUVs were parked discreetly inside my perimeter fence. Croft had called in eight private security operators—all ex-military, men with tight jaws, tactical earpieces, and concealed submachine guns beneath heavy canvas jackets.

"We don't wait for him to make a move," I told Croft in the study, pointing at the blueprints of the property laid out across my desk. "We move Sarah and Emma out of the country tonight. We charter a private jet from Charlotte straight to Zurich. Marcus can transfer the funds into a Swiss escrow repository until we hunt this man down."

"You can't move them, David," Croft said calmly, adjusting a radio on his tactical vest.

"Why the hell not?"

"Because Harlan isn't waiting in the shadows anymore. Look at your exterior telemetry."

Croft tapped the monitor screen displaying the gate cameras.

Parked two hundred yards down the winding access road, just past our private property boundary, was a silver Mercedes sedan. It wasn't hiding. Its parking lights were on, glowing yellow in the twilight. Behind it, two local county sheriff cruisers sat idling with their engine blocks warm, their lightbars dark.

"Why are the police sitting there?" Sarah asked, her voice tight with panic.

Marcus Finch stepped up to the desk, his mobile phone pressed to his ear. He hung up, his face ashen.

"A motion was filed thirty minutes ago in the Fourth Judicial District Court," Marcus said, his voice trembling with disbelief. "An emergency ex-parte writ of habeas corpus and paternity determination, coupled with an allegation of child endangerment."

"Child endangerment?" I roared. "Who filed it?"

"A high-profile legal firm out of Atlanta, representing a private trust that names Victor Harlan as the legal paternal grantor," Marcus said. "Eleanor filed a sworn affidavit from her jail cell two days ago, David. Before she was transferred to the state penitentiary, she signed a confession admitting that she falsified your adoption records and suppressed your biological lineage. She claimed under oath that Arthur coerced her, and that you are an unfit guardian who unlawfully liquidated trust funds belonging to Harlan's bloodline."

"The police are there to serve a custody order?" Sarah cried, horror painted across her features. "To take Emma? They can't do that! It’s insane!"

"They aren't here to take her tonight," Croft corrected grimly. "The sheriff doesn't have an execution order yet. But they are there to establish an active injunction. If you put Emma in a car or try to drive through that gate, you will be arrested for parental kidnapping and flight to avoid prosecution. Harlan didn't come with guns, David. He came with the law. He used your own legal system to pin you inside this house."

Before I could answer, the room plunged into total, suffocating darkness.

The hum of the refrigerator died. The desktop screens blinked out. The overhead recessed lights vanished.

A split second later, the heavy thrum of the emergency diesel generator kicked in from the detached garage, but the lights didn't return. Instead, a series of sharp, rhythmic pops echoed from the utility shed outside.

"Generator bypass failure!" one of Croft’s security guards shouted through the handheld radio. "The main feed was cut from the outside line, and the backup fuel lines were spiked with acid! We're on battery reserves only! Five minutes of backup power!"

"Emma," Sarah screamed, bolting toward the stairs.

"Sarah, stay down!" I yelled, diving forward to grab her arm, but she was already on the second step.

A deafening crack shattered the silence.

The high-pressure laminate glass of the second-story master bedroom window imploded inward. The sound of raining glass was followed instantly by the heavy, tactical thud of combat boots landing on the hardwood floor above our heads.
