Chapter 6 - A Life in the Light

ONE YEAR LATER
The warm golden light of the late afternoon sun bathed the rolling green hills of Chianti, Tuscany.
Ancient olive trees and endless rows of grapevines stretched across the valley as far as the eye could see. The air was rich with the sweet scent of blooming jasmine, terracotta, and wild cypress.
Standing on the stone terrace of a magnificent 18th-century Italian villa was a long dining table draped in crisp white linen. Surrounding the table were thirty close friends, legal partners, and former capos who had successfully transitioned into legitimate business executives.
Laughter and the clinking of crystal wine glasses floated across the warm breeze.
At the head of the table sat Clara, wearing a flowing lavender silk dress that draped gracefully over her glowing skin. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves over her shoulders, and her smile was brighter than the Tuscan sun.
Beside her sat Gabriel, looking relaxed and strikingly handsome in a light beige linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. The dark, brooding tension that had defined his face for decades was completely gone, replaced by an aura of deep, unshakeable peace.
Sitting in a carved wooden high chair beside Clara was their four-month-old daughter, Elena. The baby had Gabriel’s dark, curly hair and Clara’s bright, intelligent dark eyes.
Mateo stood up from his seat at the far end of the table, raising his glass of red wine high in the air.
"A toast!" Mateo announced loudly in Italian, drawing the attention of all the guests. "To the man who was smart enough to listen to his secretary, and to the woman who turned a syndicate into a family! May your life be long, your wine be sweet, and your spreadsheets always balance!"
The guests cheered loudly, raising their glasses into the golden sunlight. "Salute!"
Gabriel laughed, raising his glass of private reserve Chianti to touch Mateo’s across the table. He turned to look at his wife, his heart overflowing with a love so profound it brought a slight mist to his dark eyes.
He set his glass down on the white linen tablecloth, reached out, and gently took Clara’s hand under the table, intertwining his broad fingers with hers.
"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Costa?" Gabriel asked softly, leaning close so only she could hear his deep, rich voice.
Clara looked out over the sunlit valley, then at the happy faces of their friends, and finally down at their beautiful baby girl sleeping peacefully in her high chair.
"I'm thinking about thirty-two-pound stock, cream-colored paper," Clara whispered, a playful, loving smile touching her lips.
Gabriel chuckled softly, shaking his head. "The resignation letter."
"It was the best document I ever drafted," Clara said, leaning her head against his broad shoulder. "Because it forced you to finally realize what was right in front of you."
Gabriel leaned down, gently cupping her jawline with his large, warm hand, and pressed his lips against hers in a slow, deep, and devastatingly romantic kiss that carried all the sweetness of their new life in the sun.

"I knew what was in front of me from the very first day you walked into my office, Clara," Gabriel whispered against her lips as the sun set gloriously over the Tuscan hills. "I was just waiting for you to realize that you belonged to me forever."
Clara wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as the stars began to twinkle in the twilight sky. The dark shadows of New York were gone forever, replaced by the unshakeable light of a love that had conquered an empire.
