Chapter 5 - The Choice in the Rain

When Dante returned to the penthouse that evening, the apartment was completely quiet.
He walked into the living room, his eyes instantly falling on the open Manila folder sitting on the coffee table beside the plane ticket.
Emma was sitting on the balcony, watching the rain wash over Central Park, wrapped in a heavy coat.
Dante walked out onto the balcony, his jaw clenched, holding the cashier’s check in his hand.
“Celeste came here today,” Dante said, his voice low and dangerous.
Emma didn't turn around. “She was only trying to protect your legacy, Dante. She told me about the deal... about the syndicate families.”
Dante stepped closer, taking the check and tearing it into tiny pieces, letting them blow away into the rain.
“Celeste works for me,” Dante growled softly. “She doesn't decide who stays in my life.”
Emma turned to face him, tears brimming in her dark eyes. “Dante... she’s right. Look at what happened three weeks ago. You walked into a broken apartment for a girl you barely knew. If your enemies realize how much you care... they will hurt you to get to me.”
Dante closed the distance between them, taking her face in both of his large, warm hands, forcing her to look directly into his eyes.
“Let them try,” Dante declared, his voice trembling with a fierce, raw emotion that shook Emma to her core. “For fifteen years, I ran this organization out of obligation. I protected my businesses because it was my duty. But I have never fought for something I actually wanted... until I met you.”
Emma gasped softly, her breath catching in her throat.
“I don't care about the deal, Emma,” Dante whispered, his dark eyes burning with absolute devotion. “I don't care about the syndicate families. You are not a liability. You are the only good thing that has happened to this dark house in twenty years.”

Emma looked into his eyes, seeing no fear, no hesitation—only an unyielding, protective love that swept away every doubt in her heart.
She leaned up, pressing her lips to his in a deep, passionate kiss under the falling rain. Dante wrapped his broad arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, swearing a silent vow to never let her go.
