Chapter 9 - The Rescue

I was tied to a metal chair in an abandoned warehouse near the Brooklyn docks.
The Russian boss, a massive man with terrible scars, paced back and forth in front of me, laughing at my defiance.
"Moretti will surrender his entire port authority just to get you back, little bird," the Russian taunted.
"You do not know Ricardo very well if you think he surrenders," I spat back at him, my lip bleeding from where they had hit me.
Suddenly, the massive metal doors of the warehouse blew entirely off their hinges in a deafening explosion.
Thick white smoke poured into the building, followed by the terrifying sound of sustained automatic gunfire.
The Russian mercenaries scrambled for their weapons, but they were cut down before they could even aim.
Through the thick smoke, a demon walked into the warehouse.
Ricardo was dressed in a tailored black suit, holding a pair of heavy pistols, his face completely covered in blood that was not his own.
He moved like a reaper, calculating, ruthless, and absolutely unstoppable.
The Russian boss grabbed a gun and pressed it directly against my temple.
"Drop the guns, Moretti, or I paint the floor with her brains!" the Russian screamed in panic.
Ricardo did not even blink.
He raised his right hand and fired a single, perfect shot through the smoke.
The bullet struck the Russian directly between the eyes, dropping him instantly to the concrete floor.
Ricardo dropped his weapons and sprinted across the room, falling to his knees beside my chair.
He pulled a combat knife from his belt and sliced through the thick ropes binding my wrists.
"Clara, Clara, look at me," he begged, cupping my face in his shaking hands.
"I am okay, I am okay," I cried, throwing my arms around his neck and holding on for dear life.
He crushed me against his chest, completely burying his face in the crook of my neck.
"When Dante called and told me they took you, my heart completely stopped," Ricardo whispered fiercely.
"Where is Dante?" I asked, remembering the terrible betrayal.
Ricardo pulled back, his dark eyes flashing with absolute, terrifying vengeance.

"Dante is no longer a problem in this world," Ricardo promised coldly.
He picked me up effortlessly in his arms and carried me out of the nightmare, stepping over the bodies of the men who tried to take me.
