Chapter 4 - Breaking the Ice

The atmosphere in the house began to shift after that moment of vulnerability in the dressing room.
Ricardo started coming home earlier from his mysterious business meetings in the city.
He would stand in the doorway of the playroom, watching Leo and me paint messy pictures on large canvases.
He still kept his distance, but the cold, intimidating aura surrounding him had softened.
One evening, I decided it was time to force the issue between father and son.
I carried a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies into Ricardo’s private study, with Leo hiding shyly behind my legs.
Ricardo looked up from his massive mahogany desk, clearly surprised by the intrusion.
"We brought you dessert, Mr. Moretti," I announced, pushing Leo gently forward.
Leo clutched my pants tightly, absolutely terrified of the stern man sitting behind the desk.
"I am busy, Clara," Ricardo said, though his voice lacked its usual harsh bite.
"The cookies will get cold, and Leo helped me bake them," I insisted, crossing my arms.
I gave Ricardo a look that clearly communicated he was not allowed to ruin this moment.
Ricardo sighed deeply, closed his laptop, and stood up from his leather chair.
He walked around the desk and knelt on the floor, bringing himself down to his son's eye level.
"You baked these?" Ricardo asked, his voice softer than I had ever heard it.
Leo nodded slowly, holding up a slightly burnt, terribly shaped cookie.
Ricardo reached out, took the cookie, and took a large bite.
"It is the best thing I have ever tasted," Ricardo told him, a genuine smile breaking across his face.
Leo’s eyes lit up with pure joy, and he suddenly threw his little arms around his father’s neck.
Ricardo froze for a fraction of a second before wrapping his large, powerful arms tightly around his son.
I watched the ruthless mafia boss bury his face in his child's hair, his broad shoulders shaking slightly.
I quietly backed out of the study, giving them the privacy they desperately needed.
As I closed the heavy wooden door, I felt a strange, terrifying warmth spreading through my chest.

I was not just falling in love with the little boy.
I was falling in love with the monster who was trying so hard to be a man.
