Chapter 6 - The Diamond Standard

Six months later. September.
The grand opening of the new Ashford House Global Flagship store on Fifth Avenue was a night unlike any other in New York history.
The entire block of Fifth Avenue had been closed off to traffic. A sleek black carpet stretched from Fifty-Fourth Street to the glass entrance of the six-story limestone building. The facade was illuminated by soft, golden architectural lighting that highlighted the hand-carved stone crest of our family above the grand bronze doors.
Over eight hundred guests—foreign royalty, Oscar-winning actors, tech billionaires, and international museum curators—filled the three-story atrium.
Unlike the flashy, chaotic Waldorf gala hosted by Graham nine months earlier, this evening was the epitome of pure, unadulterated elegance. Classical string quartets played softly from the mezzanine level, while waitstaff in immaculate tuxedos served vintage champagne on silver trays.
I stood near the grand marble staircase, wearing an ethereal, ice-blue silk gown designed by a famed Paris couturier. Around my neck hung the completed Seraphine II—a masterpiece of seventy-two flawless D-color diamonds anchoring a breathtaking thirty-carat, royal blue Burmese sapphire at its center.
"You look extraordinary, Julianna," a warm, familiar voice said behind me.
I turned around to see Marcus Sterling, holding two glasses of champagne, his eyes bright with tears of pride.
"Grandfather would be so proud of you tonight, Julianna," Marcus whispered, handing me a glass. "He always said you had the eye of an artist and the heart of a lion."
"He gave me the foundation, Marcus," I said softly, clinking my glass against his. "I just built the walls strong enough to survive the storm."
The crowd quieted as Daniel Ross stepped up to the podium on the grand landing of the staircase, microphone in hand.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Daniel’s voice echoed warmly throughout the massive atrium. "Welcome to the new chapter of Ashford House. Tonight, we celebrate not just an iconic brand, but the vision, resilience, and unparalleled artistry of our Chief Executive Officer and Master Designer... Miss Julianna Ashford!"
A deafening wave of applause erupted across the main floor. The flashbulbs flared, setting off a dazzling constellation of white lights across the polished marble walls.
I walked slowly up the grand staircase, turning to face the sea of smiling faces, industry peers, and lifelong friends who had stood by me when the world thought my house was falling apart.
I didn't need a smooth-talking salesman to speak for me anymore. I didn't need anyone to give me permission to own my name.

I leaned toward the microphone, my smile radiant, calm, and completely unstoppable.
"Welcome to Ashford House," I said, my voice echoing clear and true through the halls of my family's legacy. "We build for eternity."
