Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Two weeks later. The Rikers Island Correctional Facility.

The visitor room was cold, smelling of industrial floor wax and stale bleach. Fluorescent light tubes hummed overhead, casting a harsh, sickly glare across the steel tables.

I sat on one side of the glass partition, wearing a navy trench coat, waiting patiently.

The heavy steel door on the opposite side buzzed open.

Graham was led inside by a correctional officer.

The transformation was shocking. Gone was the polished, immaculate CEO in his bespoke Savile Row suits and custom leather shoes. He wore an oversized, faded orange jumpsuit. His hair was messy, unwashed, and thinning at the temples. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by deep purple shadows of exhaustion and fear.

He sat down heavily on the plastic chair and picked up the gray plastic telephone receiver with a shaking hand.

I picked up my receiver and held it to my ear.

"Are you happy now?" Graham hissed into the phone, his voice raspy and bitter. "You ruined me, Julianna. You destroyed my life, my reputation, my career! I'm sitting in a cage because you couldn't handle the fact that I didn't love you anymore!"

I listened to his pathetic outburst without a single flicker of emotion on my face.

"You aren't sitting in a cage because of love, Graham," I said softly. "You are sitting in a cage because you committed eleven counts of federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate espionage."

"It was my company too!" he yelled, pressing his face close to the glass, his breath fogging the window. "I gave four years of my life to Ashford House! I brought in the young buyers! I brought in the social media buzz! You were just living off your grandfather's dead legacy!"

"Your 'social media buzz' left us with a forty-million-dollar deficit in our operating accounts," I replied calmly. "And as for Brooklyn... she took a plea deal with the District Attorney yesterday afternoon."

Graham froze. The rage in his eyes flickered, replaced by a sudden, sickening panic. "What?"

"In exchange for a suspended sentence and immunity from prosecution," I informed him, "Brooklyn surrendered all access to the Cayman accounts, handed over three hundred encrypted text messages between you and the executives at Laurent Luxury, and agreed to testify as a key witness for the prosecution."

"That... that ungrateful little bitch..." Graham gasped, his hands trembling violently against the counter. "I gave her everything! I bought her an apartment in Paris! I gave her a million dollars in jewelry!"

"You gave her my money, Graham," I reminded him. "And now, she’s returning the favor by ensuring you serve a minimum of eight to twelve years in a state penitentiary."

Graham stared at me through the glass, his arrogance finally cracking down the middle. He leaned his forehead against the barrier, letting out a dry, choking sob.

"Julianna... please," he wept, his voice dropping into a desperate, pathetic whimper. "We were married for six years. We loved each other once. Don't do this to me. Talk to the DA. Tell them it was a corporate misunderstanding. I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll give up all claims to everything. Just don't let them send me to prison."

I looked at the man I had once believed was my partner. I looked for any trace of the brilliant, charming man I had fallen in love with six years ago.

There was nothing left. He was just a hollow shell who had mistaken my quiet kindness for weakness.

"Six years ago, Graham," I said, my voice steady and clear, "you took my name because you thought it was a key that opened every door in New York. You didn't realize that the name came with a responsibility to protect the house."

I stood up from my chair, setting the phone receiver back onto its hook.

"Enjoy the sentence, Graham," I said through the glass. "It's the only thing you've ever truly earned."

I turned on my heel and walked out of the visitor room, the heavy steel door buzzing shut behind me, sealing him inside his dark new reality forever.
