Chapter 4 - The Gala of Shadows

Within two weeks, the shift in New York society was total.

Ethan Caldwell was forced out of the city, banished to a minor subsidiary branch in rural Ohio to keep him out of the public eye. The video of the incident at La Bernardine Palace was cited in major news outlets across the country as a turning point in how wealthy corporate heirs treated service staff.

My life had transformed in ways I could barely comprehend.

I had moved out of my cramped Queens apartment into a beautiful, sunlit brownstone in Greenwich Village that Victor had arranged for me. As the honorary chair of the Workers' Rights Foundation, I spent my days allocating millions of dollars toward legal defense funds for low-income workers across the city.

Yet, despite my new position, the thing that occupied my thoughts most was Victor DeLuca.

We saw each other nearly every evening. He took me to quiet dinners at small, hidden Italian trattorias in Brooklyn, walked with me through Central Park under the golden autumn trees, and spent hours listening to me talk about my childhood, my family, and my dreams.

Underneath his cold, terrifying exterior, I discovered a man of profound intellect, deep loyalty, and a fierce, protective heart that had been guarded for years after his own parents died when he was young.

One Friday evening, Victor invited me as his personal guest to the annual Metropolitan Heritage Gala—the most prestigious social event on Manhattan's winter calendar.

I wore an emerald green velvet dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline, my dark hair styled in soft, elegant waves. Victor had personally gifted me a vintage diamond necklace that rested warmly against my collarbone.

When Victor arrived at my brownstone to pick me up, wearing a flawless black tuxedo, he stopped at the bottom of the stairs, staring at me as if I were the only woman in the universe.

"You look breathtaking, Anna," Victor whispered, his voice dark and rough with raw emotion as he offered me his hand.

"Thank you, Victor," I smiled, feeling my cheeks flush warmly.

The gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was an opulent affair. Hundreds of elite guests—diplomats, CEOs, movie stars, and politicians—filled the grand hall beneath towering floral arrangements and crystal chandeliers.

As Victor walked through the room with me on his arm, conversations quieted. People whispered, staring at us with a mix of awe and envy. The waitress who had been thrown to the floor was now walking side by side with the most powerful titan in New York.

However, not everyone was pleased with my presence.

Near the champagne tower stood Victoria Vance, Victor's head of legal affairs, along with several older, conservative members of the DeLuca Enterprises board of directors.

When Victor stepped away for a brief moment to speak with the Mayor of New York, Victoria approached me, holding a glass of white wine.

"Miss Martinez," Victoria said smoothly, her eyes coolly assessing my dress and jewelry. "You look very elegant tonight."

"Thank you, Victoria," I replied politely. "And thank you for all your help with the Caldwell settlement."

Victoria took a slow sip of her wine, her expression hardening subtly. "I did my job, Anna. But I must speak frankly with you. Victor has spent fifteen years building a reputation as an untouchable, ruthless businessman. His power relies on absolute respect and authority."

I frowned slightly. "What are you saying?"

"I am saying that bringing a former waitress to high-society galas and waging public wars against old business families like the Caldwells is causing concern among our board," Victoria said coldly. "You are becoming a distraction for him, Anna. People think he is letting his emotions rule his head."

A sharp, familiar coldness settled in my stomach.

"I didn't ask Victor to fight Ethan Caldwell for me, Victoria," I said quietly, keeping my head held high. "He chose to."

"Because he is protective," Victoria countered sharply. "But protection can easily turn into vulnerability. If you truly care about Victor, you should think about whether your presence helps his future... or endangers it."

Victoria turned and slipped back into the crowd, leaving her words hanging in the air like poison.

I stood by the grand glass windows overlooking Central Park, my heart aching with a sudden, suffocating doubt. Was I dragging Victor down into unnecessary drama? Was I just a liability to a man who lived in a world of high-stakes power?

"You look like you're miles away," a deep, familiar voice murmured behind me.

I turned around. Victor stood there, holding two glasses of champagne, his gray eyes searching my face with instant concern.

"Is something wrong, Anna?" Victor asked softly.

I swallowed hard, looking at his handsome, powerful face. "Victor... do you ever regret what happened at La Bernardine?"

Victor frowned, setting the champagne glasses onto a nearby table, stepping closer to me. "What do you mean?"

"Your board members... Victoria... people think I'm a distraction for you," I admitted softly, looking down at my hands. "You're fighting wars with other powerful families because of me. Maybe I don't belong in your world."

Victor reached out, his warm, strong hand gently lifting my chin until my eyes met his. His pale gray eyes were fierce, intense, and burning with an absolute, terrifying conviction.

"Listen to me, Anna," Victor commanded softly, his voice low and intense. "My world was empty, cold, and meaningless before I saw you standing on that marble floor with your head held high. I didn't save you that night. You saved me from becoming just another cold, heartless tyrant in a expensive suit."

His thumb gently traced my jawline, making my breath catch.

May you like

"If my board doesn't like it," Victor declared quietly, "I will fire the board. If this city doesn't like it, I will buy the city. But you belong beside me, Anna. Never doubt that again."

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy filled my eyes as I leaned into his touch, realizing that no matter what storms lay ahead, this man would burn down the world before he ever let me go.
