Chapter 2 - The Viral Aftermath

By 6:00 AM the next morning, my phone was vibrating so violently against my nightstand that it slid off onto the wooden floor.
I groaned, reaching out from beneath my thin blanket, my entire right side aching from the fall the night before. My small, rent-stabilized apartment in Queens felt colder than usual as the morning autumn light crept through the cracked blinds.
When I picked up my phone, my screen was completely flooded.
Over eighty unread text messages. Dozens of missed calls from unknown numbers.
And a notification from a social media app that read: "Billionaire's Son Throws Waitress to Floor at La Bernardine - 14.2 Million Views."
My heart plummeted into my stomach.
I clicked the link with shaking fingers. There it was—a crystal-clear, forty-second video taken from Table 18. It caught everything. Ethan's arrogant sneer, the sharp shove, the sickening sound of my body hitting the marble floor, and the cruel laugh from the crowd.
And then, it showed Victor DeLuca standing up.
The comments section was a warzone:
@NYC_Realist: "Ethan Caldwell is trash! Who is the guy in the black suit who stood up for her?!"
@Empire_Gossip: "That's Victor DeLuca! The biggest real estate tycoon in New York! He just ruined Caldwell’s whole life!"
@JusticeForAnna: "This poor waitress! Look at her face! We need to find out who she is!"
Before I could process the terrifying reality that my worst moment was currently being watched by millions of strangers across the globe, my phone screen changed to an incoming call.
Caller ID: Private Number.
I swallowed hard and answered. "Hello?"
"Miss Anna Martinez?" a sharp, articulate female voice asked.
"Yes?"
"My name is Victoria Vance. I am senior counsel for DeLuca Enterprises. Mr. DeLuca asked me to reach out to you personally this morning."
"Oh," I breathed, sitting up in bed, wrapping the blanket tightly around my shoulders. "Is... is Mr. DeLuca alright? I saw the video..."
"Mr. DeLuca is entirely unbothered by the media frenzy, Miss Martinez," Victoria replied with a dry chuckle. "However, the Caldwell family’s public relations team is currently in full crisis mode. Richard Caldwell has called Mr. DeLuca six times since 5:00 AM begging for a private meeting to suppress the video before their stock market opening on Monday."
"What does Mr. DeLuca want me to do?" I asked nervously.
"Mr. DeLuca doesn't want you to do anything, Miss Martinez. He wants to know what you want," Victoria clarified. "He has arranged a private vehicle to pick you up in thirty minutes. He would like to offer you a private breakfast at his estate in Greenwich to discuss your options."
My breath caught. His estate in Greenwich?
"I... I have a shift at the restaurant at noon," I stammered automatically.
Victoria let out a soft laugh on the line. "Miss Martinez, you will never have to work a shift at La Bernardine Palace again unless you explicitly choose to. Your vehicle will be downstairs in twenty minutes."
The line went dead.
Twenty minutes later, I stood outside my modest Queens apartment building wearing my cleanest dark jeans, a simple cream sweater, and boots. A pristine black armored Maybach was idling at the curb, a uniformed driver standing by the rear door.
"Miss Martinez?" the driver asked politely, tipping his hat. "Mr. DeLuca is expecting you."
I slid into the plush, leather-scented interior of the luxury sedan. As the tinted windows rolled up and the car merged smoothly onto the highway leaving the city, I looked out at the Manhattan skyline.
Twenty-four hours ago, I was worrying about whether I had enough money in my checking account to buy groceries and pay my electric bill. Now, I was riding in a quarter-million-dollar vehicle toward the home of the most feared man in New York.
The drive to Greenwich, Connecticut took forty minutes. The vehicle turned off the main road onto a private cobblestone driveway that wound through thick, autumn-colored forests before opening up to a breathtaking iron gate.
Behind the gates sat the DeLuca ancestral estate—a massive, historic stone mansion overlooking long, rolling green hills and a private lake.
The driver parked under the grand stone portico and opened my door.
"Welcome to Blackwood Manor, Miss Martinez," he said.
I stepped out, feeling completely out of place in my simple sweater and jeans. The massive double front doors swung open, and a butler guided me through a grand foyer with marble floors, sweeping staircases, and gold-framed oil paintings into a sunlit conservatory overlooking the gardens.
Sitting at a wrought-iron table laid out with fresh fruit, pastries, and silver coffee pots sat Victor DeLuca.
He had shed his dark work suit for a dark gray cashmere sweater and slacks, looking relaxed, elegant, and dangerously magnetic.
When he saw me enter, he stood up immediately.
"Anna," Victor said, his voice warm and deep as he walked over to pull out a chair for me. "How is your hip feeling today?"
"It's... it's just a little bruised," I said softly, sitting down. "Mr. DeLuca, I don't know what to say. This estate... all of this... it’s overwhelming."
Victor sat down opposite me, pouring a cup of fresh coffee and sliding it toward me.
"You don't need to say anything, Anna," Victor replied, his pale gray eyes assessing me with intense focus. "I brought you here because Ethan Caldwell’s father made an offer thirty minutes ago."
My hands tightened around the coffee cup. "What kind of offer?"
Victor leaned back, folding his hands over his knee. "Richard Caldwell offered to drop two million dollars into a private trust fund in your name today... on one condition."
I blinked, stunned by the number. "Two million dollars? What's the condition?"
"You must sign a non-disclosure agreement, release a public statement claiming the incident at the restaurant was a staged misunderstanding for a social media stunt, and publicly clear Ethan's name."
A cold heavy lump settled in my chest.
Two million dollars would change my life forever. It would pay off my mother's remaining medical bills, buy me a quiet home, and ensure I never had to serve food to arrogant rich men again.
"What do you think I should do, Mr. DeLuca?" I asked quietly, looking into his eyes.
Victor leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, bringing his face closer to mine.
"If you accept the money, Anna, you will be financially secure," Victor said honestly. "But you will let a coward buy his way out of consequences, and you will carry a lie for the rest of your life."
"And if I refuse?"
Victor’s eyes burned with a dark, thrilling light.
"If you refuse," Victor whispered, "I will use every resource I possess to legally dismantle the Caldwell family's empire piece by piece. I will make Ethan Caldwell answer for every act of cruelty he has ever committed in this city."
May you like
He reached across the table and placed his warm, strong hand over mine.
"The choice is entirely yours, Anna," Victor said softly. "Whatever you decide, I will back you one hundred percent."
