Chapter 3 - The Social Media Avalanche

By 6:00 a.m. the following morning, the story had broken out of the local business columns and flooded the national social media landscape like a tidal wave.

It wasn't just a corporate takeover; it was a public execution of an arrogant dynasty.

A guest sitting at a neighboring table in the Hawthorne Hotel had recorded a clear, forty-five-second video of the incident at the dinner table. The footage showed Madison holding the wine glass above my mother’s head, the cold smirk on her face, the deliberate tip of the wrist, and the burst of laughter from the Cole family as the dark red liquid ruined my mother’s dress.

The video had been posted to TikTok at 11:00 p.m. under the title: "Boutique Hotel Heir Spills Wine on Waiter/Family at Luxury Hotel—Watch What Happens Next."

By morning, the video had amassed over 14 million views, 2 million likes, and eighty thousand comments.

Netizens, disgusted by the sheer arrogance of the Cole family, had quickly identified everyone at the table:

"Is that Madison Cole?! The one who posts 'self-made female CEO' videos on Instagram while using her brother's stolen money?!"

"Look at the husband sitting there LAUGHING while his poor mother-in-law stands there soaked! Absolute human garbage!"

"The way the uncle pulled the napkin basket away was SO VILE! These people are demonic!"

"UPDATE: The wife is actually the MAJORITY OWNER of the entire hotel chain and just fired the whole family on the spot! QUEEN BEHAVIOR!"

I sat in the high-floor glass office of Apex Capital Holdings in financial district, sipping Earl Grey tea while reviewing the morning's market reports. Beside me, my mother was dressed in a soft cashmere sweater I had purchased for her that morning, smiling gently as she looked out over the Boston skyline.

"Are you sure you’re okay, Mom?" I asked, reaching across the desk to squeeze her hand.

"I’m more than okay, Natalie," Evelyn said, her eyes bright with pride. "For seven years, I watched you stay quiet while Ryan took credit for your late nights, your legal work, and your vision. I watched his sister speak down to you at every holiday dinner. Seeing you stand up yesterday... it was the best gift you could have ever given your father and me."

The double doors of my office swung open, and Daniel Price entered, carrying a tablet and a fresh stack of legal notices.

"Morning, Natalie," Daniel said, taking a seat across from me. "The Cole Hospitality stock opened down fourteen percent this morning due to the viral scandal, but as soon as we filed the SEC statement confirming your assumption of the Interim CEO position and the removal of Ryan Cole, the stock rebounded twenty-two percent."

"What about Ryan?" I asked.

"He’s currently hiding at his sister’s townhome in Brookline," Daniel chuckled softly. "He spent the last six hours calling every crisis PR firm in the city. None of them will touch him. The viral video has turned the Cole name into absolute radioisotope toxicity."

"And the forensic audit?"

"Deloitte found another $2.1 million in unauthorized loans Ryan took out using fake collateral certificates," Daniel revealed, placing a red-labeled folder on my desk. "The State Attorney General's Financial Crimes Unit has officially opened a preliminary inquiry. If we press full charges on behalf of Apex Capital, Ryan is looking at five to eight years in a state facility."

My phone chimed on the desk. It was an incoming video call from an unlisted number.

I tapped the screen and placed it on speaker, leaning back in my leather chair.

Ryan’s face appeared on the display. He was sitting in a dark room with unwashed hair, dark purple circles under his bloodshot eyes, wearing a crumpled t-shirt. He looked thirty years older than he had twenty-four hours ago.

"Natalie..." Ryan choked out, his voice hoarse and desperate. "Natalie, please... you have to answer me. They’re freezing my personal checking accounts. My credit card was declined at the grocery store this morning. The press is standing outside Madison’s driveway!"

"Good morning, Ryan," I said calmly.

"Natalie, I’m begging you!" Ryan wept, leaning closer to the camera, his hands shaking. "I was stupid! I was arrogant! I let Madison and my uncle get into my head! I swear to God I love you! We can fix this! I'll publicly apologize to your parents! I'll bow down to your mother on national news if you want me to!"

"You didn't care about my mother when she was standing there covered in wine, Ryan," I replied, my voice cool and steady. "You didn't care about my father when you tried to steal his life savings. You only care now because the money stopped flowing."

"Please, Natalie! Don't ruin my life!" Ryan pleaded. "I have nothing without Cole Hospitality! I am nothing without you!"

"You finally understand," I said softly. "You were never the CEO, Ryan. You were just the man I allowed to hold the title. My attorney will see you at the settlement conference at 2:00 p.m."

I tapped the red button, cutting off his weeping face mid-sentence.
