Chapter 2 - The Audit and The Ashes

The main lobby of the Hawthorne Hotel was bustling with evening guests, high-society donors, and regional business leaders when the Cole family was marched out of the private elevator.

Ryan looked like a man who had been hit by a freight train. He tried to hold his head high, but the presence of two uniform officers standing on either side of him made it impossible to pretend this was a routine departure.

"Natalie!" Ryan shouted, spinning around as I walked out of the elevator behind him, supporting my mother with one arm while my father carried her coat. "Natalie, stop this right now! We are married! Whatever business disagreement we have, we settle it at home! You can't humiliate my family in public!"

I stopped near the center marble fountain, where several hotel guests turned to watch the commotion.

"Your family humiliated themselves the moment Madison tipped that glass," I said, my voice ice-cold. "And you humiliated yourself when you laughed."

"It was red wine on a cheap dress!" Madison spat, stepping forward with her phone raised, her face twisted in rage. "My family built Cole Hospitality! My grandfather laid the foundation for every hotel in this chain! You’re just a leech who used our name to build your little legal portfolio!"

Daniel Price stepped between Madison and me, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out a single sheet of embossed paper.

"Ms. Cole," Daniel said calmly. "I suggest you put your phone down. As of five minutes ago, forensic accountants from Deloitte have entered the brand’s headquarters in South Boston. They are currently reviewing the $1.4 million in 'marketing expenses' you submitted over the last twenty-four months through your shell company, Lumina PR."

Madison’s arm froze in mid-air. Her phone trembled slightly. "What... what are you talking about? Those were legitimate consulting fees!"

"They were transfers used to pay for your luxury lease in Back Bay, your personal trips to Aspen, and three private yacht charters in the Bahamas," Daniel replied, pulling out a second document. "All authorized by your brother without board approval. That constitutes corporate embezzlement and grand larceny under state law."

Uncle Arthur stepped forward, his voice shaking with panic. "Now wait just a minute! Ryan promised us that the retirement fund investment from Thomas and Evelyn would clear the shortfall! We were told the firm was expanding!"

"Ryan lied to you, Arthur," I said, looking Uncle Arthur straight in the eye. "Cole Hospitality hasn't expanded in three years. The company has been losing $400,000 a month because Ryan was using corporate debt to cover his personal trading losses on the futures market. He wanted my parents’ $800,000 retirement savings not to expand the brand, but to cover the Q3 payroll so he wouldn't get caught before the annual audit."

My father, Thomas, stood tall beside my mother, his dark eyes fixed on the man he had welcomed into his home for seven years.

"You sat at my Sunday dinner table, Ryan," my father said, his voice low and vibrating with quiet disgust. "You drank my coffee, you asked for my blessing, and all the while you were planning to steal the money I earned working sixty hours a week for forty years?"

"Dad... please, it wasn't like that," Ryan stammered, stepping toward my father, his hands raised in a desperate gesture of innocence. "I was going to pay it back! I was going to give you equity shares that would be worth millions once the expansion cleared!"

"The expansion was a lie, Ryan," I said. "And as of tonight, your access to my life, my family, and my assets is officially terminated."

I turned to Elizabeth Vance. "Elizabeth, please ensure Mr. Cole’s personal items are cleared from the CEO office by midnight. Change the digital passcodes on all regional properties."

"Already done, Natalie," Elizabeth nodded.

"You can't kick me out of my own company!" Ryan screamed as the security guards stepped closer, grabbing his arms as he tried to push past them toward me. "I’m the face of Cole Hospitality! The board needs me! The media knows ME!"

"The media is about to know a lot more about you, Ryan," I said, pulling my phone from my pocket as a notification flashed across the screen. "Because ten minutes ago, the press release went live."
