Chapter 5 - The Fortress at Lake Geneva

The sun was just beginning to peek over the misty waters of Lake Geneva when Dominic’s car pulled through the massive wrought-iron gates of the estate.

The compound was a sprawling masterpiece of stone and glass, surrounded by fifty acres of dense pine forest and secured by state-of-the-art security systems. It was a place Dominic had bought years ago, intending it to be a sanctuary—a place far removed from the concrete and blood of Chicago.

He walked up the grand stone steps and pushed open the heavy oak doors.

The house was quiet, filled with the soft, golden light of dawn.

In the main living room, sitting on a plush white sofa in front of a crackling fireplace, was Hannah.

She was wearing an oversized cashmere sweater over her leggings, her hair freshly washed, her face pale but resting peacefully. In her arms, wrapped in a soft white blanket, was the baby.

When she heard his footsteps, she looked up.

Dominic stopped near the edge of the room. He looked at her—really looked at her. For eight months, he had imagined this reunion in a hundred different ways. He had imagined anger, confrontation, cold distance.

Instead, looking at her sitting by the fire with his son in her arms, he felt only a profound, breathtaking sense of coming home.

He walked over slowly, dropping his heavy coat onto a chair, and sat down on the sofa beside her.

Hannah leaned her head against his broad shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief.

"Is it over?" she whispered.

"It's over," Dominic replied, his voice soft and tender. "The men who threatened you are gone. The leak in my organization has been eliminated. You are safe, Hannah. Both of you."

Hannah looked down at the tiny baby, who opened his eyes slightly—revealing dark, intelligent slate-gray eyes that matched Dominic’s exactly.

"Have you thought of a name?" Dominic asked softly, reaching out to stroke the infant's soft cheek.

Hannah smiled—a small, radiant smile that brought the dimples back to her cheeks. "Leo," she said softly. "Leonardo Vale."

Dominic felt a sudden, thick knot form in his throat. Leonardo Vale.

"You gave him my name," Dominic murmured, his voice cracking slightly with uncharacteristic emotion.

"He was always yours, Dominic," Hannah whispered, looking up into his eyes. "Even when I was angry... even when I was terrified... he was always yours. Just like I was."

Dominic cupped her face in his hand, leaning down until their lips were inches apart.

"I made a mistake eight months ago, Hannah," Dominic said, his voice filled with a desperate, absolute sincerity. "I thought if I didn't tell you how much I loved you, I was protecting you. I thought if I kept you at arm's length, my world wouldn't touch you. But the truth is... my world is empty without you."

Tears filled Hannah’s eyes—not tears of pain or terror, but of pure, beautiful joy.

"Tell me now," she whispered against his lips.

"I love you," Dominic said, pressing his lips firmly against hers in a long, passionate, desperate kiss that healed eight months of agony in a single second. "I love you, Hannah Reed. More than my life. More than my empire."

Hannah kissed him back, her fingers tangling in his dark hair, pulling him closer as the morning sun flooded the room with golden light.
