Chapter 5 - THE BAIT AND THE SWITCH

The sun was just beginning to peek over the Chicago skyline, painting the clouds in bruised shades of purple and gold, when Agent Torres laid out the blueprint on the small stainless-steel table in Room 312.
"Victor Vance operates like an old-school mafia boss disguised as a modern tech philanthropist," Rachel explained, tapping a pen against a printed diagram of a sprawling, heavily fortified estate in the suburbs of Lake Forest. "He keeps his offshore accounts, illegal shell companies, and the original binding contract Clara signed twelve years ago inside a high-security walk-in safe in his private study."
"A safe?" James crossed his arms, leaning against the wall. "Victor’s estate has armed private security patrols every hundred yards, motion sensors, thermal cameras, and biometric locks. You can't just walk in there with a crowbar."
"We aren't going to walk in with a crowbar," Rachel said smoothly. "We're going to use Victor’s greatest weakness against him: his arrogance."
She looked at me. "Sarah, Victor believes you are a terrified, middle-class suburban housewife who is currently furious with her husband for keeping secrets. He thinks you want nothing to do with this baby, and that given enough pressure, you’ll pack up your bags and leave James behind."
"And how does that help us?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Because by noon today, Victor’s legal team is going to file an emergency custody petition in the county probate court, claiming that you and James are harboring an abandoned infant without legal guardianship," Rachel said. "They will demand a court-ordered surrender of the child within twenty-four hours."
James slammed his hand against the table. "They can't do that! Lily is my blood niece!"
"Legally, without a birth certificate listing Clara or James as parents, Victor’s lawyers will twist the narrative to make you look like kidnappers," Rachel warned. "Which is why we aren't going to fight him in court today. We are going to let him win."
My eyes widened. "Win? Are you insane?"
"Listen to me," Rachel leaned forward, lowering her voice. "Victor wants public validation. He wants to crush you completely, legally, and humiliatingly so no one ever questions his authority again. To do that, he will host an emergency arbitration meeting at his Lake Forest estate this evening, demanding you sign over all guardianship rights in exchange for dropping kidnapping charges against James."
She smiled slyly. "And while Victor and his entire legal team are sitting in that boardroom arguing with you and James... my federal cyber-unit will execute a silent, digital and physical raid on his private study, pulling the original contract, the wire fraud records, and the offshore bank accounts directly from his safe."
"And the baby?" I asked, my voice trembling. "What happens to Lily while we're in the lion's den?"
"Lily stays with my trusted undercover unit in a secure safehouse two miles away from the estate," Rachel assured me. "Victor will never even know she left the hospital until his empire is already collapsing around him."
I looked at James. He was staring at me, not with the sheepish guilt of a man caught in a lie, but with the quiet, desperate hope of a husband asking his wife to jump off a cliff with him and trust that the parachute would open.
"Sarah," James whispered, taking my hands in his. They were warm now. Steady. "You have every right in the world to walk out that door right now. You didn't ask for this war. You didn't ask to be dragged into my family's nightmare."
I looked down at our intertwined fingers. Then I thought about our three boys waiting at home, about the life we had built together, and about the tiny, defenseless baby girl sleeping peacefully in the next room who deserved a family free from shadows and fear.

I squeezed James’s hands back.
"If we're going to burn Victor Vance's empire to the ground," I said softly, a fierce smile touching my lips, "let's make sure we roast marshmallows over the ashes."
