Chapter 4 - THE ALLIANCE IN THE SHADOWS

Before Victor could snap his fingers to signal his bodyguards, the sharp, authoritative flash of a camera bulb lit up the dark hospital room.

Victor spun around, his aristocratic composure cracking for the first time.

Standing in the open doorway, holding a professional DSLR camera with a high-powered telephoto lens, was a young woman in a trench coat, her messy brown hair tied up in a loose bun.

"Mr. Victor Vance," the woman said brightly, clicking off another series of rapid-fire photos. "Head of Vance Global Enterprises, billionaire philanthropist on paper, and midnight intruder in a maternity ward in reality. How do you think the Chicago Tribune’s front-page headline will read tomorrow morning? ‘Billionaire Tycoon Terrorizes Newborn and Family in Hospital Ambush’?"

Victor’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. He gestured furiously to his bodyguards. "Seize that camera! Erase the memory card! Break her fingers if you have to!"

The two massive guards lunged toward the doorway, but the woman in the trench coat didn't flinch. She stepped backward into the hallway just as a squad of uniformed local police officers—led by a burly captain with his badge gleaming under the lights—stepped out from behind the corner, blocking the guards' path with drawn Tasers and heavy batons.

"Hold it right there! Federal and local task force! Hands where we can see them!" the captain roared, his hand resting firmly on his holster.

Victor froze. His bodyguards instantly dropped their hands, stepping back and glaring daggers at the officers.

Victor slowly turned his head back toward the woman with the camera. His eyes were like chips of flint. "You're playing a very dangerous game, young lady. Do you have any idea who I am?"

"Oh, I know exactly who you are, Mr. Vance," the woman said with a confident smirk, stepping back into the room and lowering her camera. She pulled a shiny metal badge out of her pocket and flashed it briefly. "Agent Rachel Torres, U.S. Department of Justice, Organized Crime and Financial Fraud Division. And your little midnight visit just added kidnapping, extortion, and trespassing to the federal indictment we’ve been building against you for the last three years."

James and I stared at the federal agent in stunned disbelief.

Victor Vance, however, merely adjusted his lapels, recovering his icy composure with terrifying speed. He offered Agent Torres a cold, patronizing smile.

"An indictment based on what, Agent Torres? Rumors? Family disputes? You have no signed warrants, no proof of wrongdoing, and certainly no legal right to detain me in a public corridor," Victor said smoothly. He turned his chilling gaze back toward James and me. "Enjoy your little victory tonight, nephew. But remember... money buys law. Power buys time. And I own both."

With a flick of his wrist, Victor turned on his heel and walked out of the room, his bodyguards flanking him tightly. The police officers watched him go, knowing as well as he did that arresting a billionaire in his tax bracket without a fully sealed federal warrant was nearly impossible.

As the echo of Victor’s footsteps faded down the hallway, Agent Torres exhaled a long breath, slammed the door shut, and turned to us.

"Are you guys alright?" she asked, her professional demeanor instantly softening into genuine concern.

"Who... who are you?" James asked, running a shaking hand through his hair. "How did you know we were here?"

"My name is Rachel Torres," she said, pulling a folding chair over and sitting down. "And I was Clara’s secret contact inside the Department of Justice for the last six months."

My jaw dropped. "Clara knew a federal agent?"

"Clara knew she was dying, and she knew Victor was coming for her baby," Rachel explained, opening a worn leather notebook. "She spent the last year of her life funneling every encrypted financial document, wire transfer receipt, and legal loophole Victor used to steal her family trust directly to my desk. We’ve been waiting for the right moment to strike. But when Clara went into labor early and passed away, we knew Victor would move fast."

Rachel looked directly at me, her dark eyes filled with deep empathy. "Mrs. Vance—Sarah—I know your husband lied to you about his past. I know your life has been turned upside down in twenty-four hours. But right now, you and James are the only people standing between this little girl and a lifetime of psychological imprisonment in Victor’s estate."

I looked over at the bathroom door. Faintly, I could hear Lily cooing softly in her sleep.

My anger—the bitter, burning resentment I had felt toward James just hours ago—didn't vanish entirely. But it shifted. It transformed from self-pity into something much more dangerous.

"What do we do?" I asked, my voice steady, resolute, and completely devoid of fear.

Agent Torres smiled—a sharp, determined grin. "We trap a billionaire."
