Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Caleb opened the front door before the officers could reach the porch steps. He stepped outside, closing the door firmly behind him to keep Sadie out of view.

“Caleb Mercer?” the lead deputy asked, holding a manila folder.

“Yes,” Caleb said, standing tall on the top step.

“Mr. Mercer, I am Brenda Sterling from County Child Protective Services,” the woman in the navy suit stepped forward, her tone cold and authoritarian. “We received an emergency notification this morning that you removed a minor ward, Sadie Mercer, from an authorized residence without court clearance.”

“I am her biological father,” Caleb said calmly. “And she is in my legal care.”

“Your legal paternity has not been formally verified by a state family court, Mr. Mercer,” Brenda Sterling sneered, adjusting her glasses. “Until a court-mandated DNA evaluation is processed, the child remains a ward of the state under my agency’s jurisdiction. We have an emergency protective order to take her into temporary custody.”

Behind her, the two deputies shifted their weight, their hands resting near their duty belts.

Caleb’s eyes narrowed as he looked at Brenda Sterling. He recognized her name from the notes Marcus had sent him two hours earlier—she was the caseworker who had received three "consulting fee" payments from Victoria’s private foundation over the last three months.

“Where are you planning to take her, Ms. Sterling?” Caleb asked, his voice dripping with ice. “To the private care clinic in Vermont? The one Victoria Mercer pays you ten thousand dollars a month to manage?”

Brenda’s composure shattered instantly. Her eyes widened, her hand tightening around her clipboard. “I... I don't know what you are talking about. Officers, execute the order. Secure the child.”

The two deputies took a step up the porch stairs.

“I wouldn't do that if I were you, gentlemen,” a loud, authoritative voice called out from the end of the driveway.

A dark blue unmarked SUV pulled up fast behind the police cruiser.

Marcus Vance stepped out of the driver’s seat, followed immediately by Special Agent Karen Thorne from the State Attorney General’s Public Integrity Bureau.

“Special Agent Thorne,” Marcus announced, holding up an official badge shield. “We have an active federal wire fraud and child endangerment warrant targeting St. Jude’s Family Services.”

Agent Thorne walked directly up the porch steps, staring down Brenda Sterling, who had turned as white as a sheet.

“Ms. Sterling,” Agent Thorne said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit human trafficking, falsifying state records, and accepting corporate bribes.”

“What? No! This is a mistake!” Brenda shrieked as the agent grabbed her wrists, snapping the cuffs into place. “I was just following orders from Mercer Global!”

“You can tell that to the grand jury,” Agent Thorne said coldly, handing the terrified caseworker over to the local deputies, who looked completely bewildered.

Agent Thorne turned to Caleb, offering a warm, professional smile. “Mr. Mercer? Detective Vance showed us the financial records you uncovered. Your daughter is completely safe. Nobody is taking her anywhere.”

Caleb let out a long breath, feeling the crushing tension leave his shoulders. “Thank you, Agent Thorne.”

“Don't thank me yet, Caleb,” Marcus stepped up beside him, his expression serious. “We just got the warrant for Victoria’s estate. The state police are raiding Mercer Manor right now.”
