Chapter 5 - The Heart of the Rabbit

The morning sun broke through the coastal fog, casting long, golden beams of light through the living room windows.

Caleb sat on the floor rug beside Sadie, holding a pair of small sewing scissors. Sadie sat cross-legged, watching him with intense curiosity as she munched on a slice of buttered toast.

“Mommy said Barnaby was a magic bunny,” Sadie said, her mouth slightly full. “She said he was holding a secret map.”

“Let’s see what Mommy hid for us, okay?” Caleb said gently.

With extreme care, Caleb snipped the heavy black thread along the seam of the rabbit’s back. He reached his fingers inside the soft white batting and pulled out a small, metallic object wrapped in clear plastic tape.

It was a heavy brass key stamped with the number 408, attached to a high-density, encrypted silver USB drive.

Caleb’s heart hammered against his ribs. He stood up, fetched his laptop from the kitchen table, and plugged the drive into the USB port.

A single folder appeared on the screen, titled: FOR CALEB - DO NOT DELETE.

He clicked the file.

An audio recording immediately began playing through the laptop speakers. The room filled with the unmistakable, clear sound of Mara’s voice, recorded in a quiet room with the faint hum of traffic in the background.

“Caleb... if you are listening to this, it means I didn't survive the treatment. I am so sorry I couldn't tell you this face to face.”

Caleb closed his eyes for a second, absorbing the sound of her voice—a sound he had missed for six agonizing years.

“Five years ago, after Sadie was born, a lawyer named Julian Vance came to my apartment,” Mara’s recorded voice continued, growing firmer. “He offered me two million dollars to sign over my grandfather’s land trust in Oakridge to Mercer Global. When I refused, he threatened to have child services declare me mentally unfit. I knew I couldn't fight them alone, so I started recording every phone call, every visit.”

The audio file transitioned into a phone recording.

A sharp, cruel voice echoed from the speakers:

“Listen to me very carefully, Mara,” Victoria’s voice came through the file, loud and crystal clear. “Caleb belongs to Mercer Global. He is marrying into the Harrington family next year. If you ruin this merger with your illegitimate child, I will make sure you end up in a state mental facility before the week is out. The local social workers are on my payroll. Nobody will believe a penniless girl over me.”

Sadie stopped chewing her toast. She looked up at the laptop, her little face pale. “That’s the mean lady from the party,” she whispered.

Caleb reached out and closed the laptop lid, taking a deep breath to steady his shaking hands.

The recording was absolute gold. It proved extortion, witness intimidation, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to falsify child welfare records.

“Caleb!”

The sound of heavy tires crunching over the gravel driveway outside interrupted his thoughts.

Caleb stepped to the window, pulling back the sheer curtain.

A black sedan had stopped in front of the house. Out stepped two uniformed officers from the County Sheriff’s Department, accompanied by a sharp-featured woman in a navy suit holding a clipboard—Brenda Sterling, the lead caseworker from St. Jude’s Family Services.
