Chapter 5 - The Corporate Fallout

The story of Flight 842 didn't end on the Tampa tarmac.

By the next morning, the news had gone completely viral worldwide. The video filmed by a passenger showing Eleanor Vance being led off the plane in handcuffs—and the story of the brilliant ten-year-old girl who exposed her—was featured on every major cable news network and trending #1 on social media.

While we were relaxing at my brother’s quiet waterfront home in Tampa, the corporate empire of Vance Logistics was crumbling into dust.

It turned out that Eleanor Vance and her brother, CEO Arthur Vance, had been illegally manipulating corporate stocks for years. Facing an upcoming federal audit, Eleanor had attempted to execute a final, desperate cyber-extraction of proprietary flight routing algorithms from the airline’s server while in transit—believing that doing it mid-air would make the digital signal impossible to trace.

She had specifically targeted row 12A because it sat directly above the server node.

When she found me—a tired, stressed mother traveling alone with a newborn and a young girl—she assumed I would be an easy target who wouldn't make a fuss about moving.

Her arrogance had cost her everything.

On Tuesday morning, three days after our flight, a sleek black sedan pulled up to my brother’s driveway.

Out stepped a middle-aged woman in a crisp gray suit carrying a large leather briefcase. She walked up to the front porch, where I was sitting in a rocking chair holding Jonah, while Sadie played in the yard with her uncle’s dog.

“Mrs. Brooke Ellison?” the woman asked politely, extending her card. “My name is Sarah Jenkins. I am the Chief Executive Officer of SkyWay Airlines.”

I blinked in surprise. “The CEO?”

“Yes, Mrs. Ellison,” Sarah Jenkins said warmly, taking a seat on the porch bench. “I flew in from our headquarters in Chicago specifically to meet you and your daughter.”

Sadie walked up onto the porch, wiping her hands on her shorts.

Sarah Jenkins looked at my daughter with deep respect. “Sadie, what you did on Flight 842 saved our airline from a catastrophic cyber breach that could have cost us hundreds of millions of dollars and compromised passenger privacy.”

Sarah opened her briefcase and pulled out an official legal document along with a sleek, gold-embossed card.

“First,” Sarah announced, “SkyWay Airlines is presenting your family with lifetime, unlimited First-Class travel passes to any destination in the world.”

Sadie’s eyes went wide. “Lifetime First Class?!”

“Second,” the CEO continued, smiling brightly, “our board of directors has established a fully funded $250,000 university scholarship fund in Sadie Ellison’s name, guaranteed for her future education in technology and science.”

I felt tears prickling at the corners of my eyes. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The financial stress that had been weighing on my shoulders for months—the constant worrying about the future, the endless juggling of bills—seemed to melt away in a single second.

“And finally,” Sarah added, sliding a check across the table toward me, “as a formal apology for the distress caused by the seating conflict and to honor your daughter’s courage, our legal team has approved a lump-sum compensation reward of $100,000 for your family.”

I stared at the check in absolute disbelief.

One hundred thousand dollars cash. Plus a quarter-million dollar scholarship for my daughter. Plus lifetime travel.

“I... I don't know what to say,” I stammered, my voice thick with emotion.

“You don't have to say anything, Mrs. Ellison,” Sarah Jenkins smiled, standing up and shaking my hand. “You raised an extraordinary daughter. The world needs more people like her.”
