Chapter 4 - The Tampa Tarmac

When the tires of Flight 842 struck the runway at Tampa International Airport, nobody unbuckled their seatbelts.

The moment the plane taxied to a halt at Gate E74, the Captain’s voice came over the loudspeaker: “Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated with your seatbelts fastened until local authorities have cleared the aircraft.”

Through the cabin window of Row 14, I watched three black unmarked SUVs with flashing blue and red lights pull directly onto the tarmac beside the jet bridge.

Six men in dark suits carrying tactical cases walked up the service stairs into the jet bridge.

The forward airplane door opened with a heavy thud. Two tall, sharp-eyed FBI special agents entered the cabin, guided directly by Purser Miller to Row 12.

Eleanor Vance didn't even attempt to argue. She sat trembling in her seat as one of the agents leaned down, his voice cold and professional.

“Eleanor Vance? I am Special Agent Miller with the Cyber Crime Division. You are being detained under suspicion of federal corporate espionage, unauthorized access to critical infrastructure, and wire fraud.”

“This is a misunderstanding!” Eleanor pleaded, her voice cracking with desperation as the agent placed silver handcuffs around her wrists. “I’m a director at Vance Logistics! My brother owns the company!”

“Your brother is currently being questioned at our Chicago office, Ms. Vance,” the agent replied dispassionately. “Your company’s stock was shorted by fifty million dollars thirty minutes ago based on proprietary data you were attempting to leak from this flight.”

The passengers across the plane gasped. Phones immediately came out as people began filming the high-society executive being led down the aisle in handcuffs.

As Eleanor was escorted past our row, her eyes locked onto mine. Her arrogant demeanor was entirely shattered, her face wet with tears of shame.

“You should have just taken the open seat in the back,” Eleanor spat through her teeth, her voice trembling with bitter hatred.

I looked her dead in the eye, clutching my sleeping baby boy against my chest, my daughter standing proudly at my side.

“You picked the wrong seat,” I said clearly. “And you picked the wrong family.”

The agents marched Eleanor off the aircraft into the waiting black SUVs.

When Purser Miller announced that the remaining passengers were free to deplane, the entire cabin broke out into spontaneous applause. People cheered, clapping for Sadie as we gathered our carry-on bags and walked down the aisle.

When we stepped out of the jet bridge into the bright, sunlit Tampa terminal, a tall man in a navy jacket was waiting near the security desk.

“Uncle Mark!” Sadie squealed, dropping her teal backpack and sprinting into her uncle's open arms.

My brother Mark lifted my daughter into the air, laughing loudly before pulling me and baby Jonah into a massive, warm hug.

“I heard everything from the airport security tower,” Mark said, looking at Sadie with pure, unadulterated awe. “Sadie... you actually spotted an active data-bridge under a seat? Are you kidding me?!”

“I remembered what you taught me at Christmas, Uncle Mark!” Sadie beamed proudly.

Mark looked at me, his eyes filled with pride and affection. “Brooke, you look exhausted, but you raising a absolute genius here.”

“I know,” I smiled, feeling a deep, profound sense of relief washing over me as we walked out toward the sunshine of Florida. “I really do.”
