Chapter 9 - A New Dawn on the Hudson

Three months later, the spring thaw had turned the Hudson River into a rushing, sparkling ribbon of silver beneath the April sun.

The grand ballroom of the Valente mansion was no longer a place of fear and suspicion. The crystal chandeliers still blazed, but tonight, the air was filled with the soft, elegant strains of a live piano playing jazz, and the genuine laughter of guests who were there out of loyalty, not terror.

It was Sophia’s eighth birthday party.

She stood at the center of the room in a pale pink dress—identical to the one from a year ago, except this time, her real silver bracelet with the blue enamel butterfly sparkled brightly on her wrist.

At the head table, a magnificent vanilla cake sat proudly, its frosting smooth and flawless. No almond paste. No hidden poison. Just pure, sweet celebration.

Sophia cut the first slice with a silver knife, laughing as she handed it straight to Mara, who stood beside her wearing an elegant emerald-green evening gown instead of a maid's uniform.

Across the room, leaning against a marble pillar with a glass of scotch in his hand, Roman Valente watched them. His dark suit was tailored to perfection, his expression relaxed for the first time in a decade.

He walked over slowly as the guests mingled around them, stopping right in front of Mara.

"You missed your shift in the nursery today," Roman said, a faint, teasing smile touching his lips.

"My contract was amended, Mr. Valente," Mara replied smoothly, taking a sip of sparkling cider. "Clause four states that private guardians are exempt from nursery duty on birthdays."

"Is that so?" Roman raised an eyebrow. "And what does clause five say?"

Mara turned to face him fully, her dark eyes sparkling with quiet confidence and warmth. "Clause five says the guardian gets to dance with the boss after the cake is cut."

Roman didn't hesitate. He set his glass down on a passing waiter's tray, took Mara’s hand in his, and pulled her gently toward the center of the polished marble dance floor as the piano swelled into a soft, romantic melody.

Sophia cheered from the side, clapping her hands happily as she danced in a circle with Salvatore, who looked entirely out of place yet completely content.

The underworld whispered about the Valente syndicate’s new era—an era where the iron fist was finally guided by an open heart. But in the center of the ballroom, holding the woman who had saved his family and the daughter who was his entire world, Roman Valente knew the truth: the house wasn't locked anymore because the monsters were gone, and the family was finally, truly safe.
