Chapter 4 - The Shadow War Begins

The dawn broke over the Hudson River, casting long, bruised streaks of purple and orange across the sky. Inside the Valente mansion, sleep was a luxury no one could afford.

Roman stood in his private underground armory, surrounded by racks of assault rifles, tactical vests, and encrypted communication consoles. Salvatore stood beside him, tapping data onto a military-grade tablet.

"Isabella’s confession confirms what our intelligence guessed," Salvatore said grimly. "The Vanguard Syndicate isn't just trying to muscle in on our shipping lanes in New York. They’re trying to decapitate the family from the inside. Viktor Vance is moving his enforcers into New Jersey as we speak."

"Vance thinks because I spent the last two years legitimizing our real estate holdings that I've gone soft," Roman muttered, racking the slide of a customized Sig Sauer pistol with a crisp, mechanical snap. "He thinks my daughter is a vulnerability."

"She is a vulnerability, boss," Salvatore said quietly, earning a razor-sharp glare from Roman. "As long as she’s in this house, she’s a target. The estate is secure for now, but Vance has sympathizers in the municipal police and federal marshals. We can't keep her here indefinitely."

"Then where do we put her?" Roman growled.

"We don't," a voice spoke from the doorway.

Roman and Salvatore spun around. Mara stood in the doorway of the armory, wearing her simple maid's uniform, her hands clasped neatly in front of her apron. She looked tired, dark circles under her eyes, but her posture was unyielding.

"You don't belong in here, Mara," Roman warned, though his tone lacked its usual lethal edge.

"Probably not," Mara stepped into the room anyway. "But Miss Sophia woke up ten minutes ago asking for her mother's photo, and then she asked if I was going to stay. She won't eat breakfast unless I'm the one who pours the milk. And she definitely won't trust any nanny you hire after what just happened."

Roman stared at her. "What are you suggesting?"

"I'm suggesting that you need someone who knows how to spot an allergy, someone who isn't on the syndicate payroll, and someone your daughter actually trusts," Mara said, meeting his intense gaze head-on. "I'm resigning as a maid, Mr. Valente. Starting today, I'm Sophia's full-time private guardian. Or I walk out those front gates right now and take my chances with the police."

Salvatore choked back a laugh, waiting for the Don to explode.

Instead, a slow, humorless smile touched the corners of Roman's mouth. "You think you can negotiate with a mafia boss?"

"I don't negotiate," Mara replied coolly. "I bargain. You protect us from Viktor Vance, and I keep your daughter alive. Do we have a deal?"

May you like

Roman walked slowly across the concrete floor until he stood right in front of her. He was nearly a foot taller, towering over her like a monolith of power and danger. Yet Mara didn't blink or step back.

"Deal," Roman said softly. "Salvatore, draw up a standard-issue protection contract and a triple-tier salary package. From this moment on, Mara Ellis answers to no one in this house except me."
