Chapter 7 - Night at the Newport Estate

The Gilded Age mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, loomed over the crashing waves of the Atlantic like a dark, gothic fortress. Built in the late 1800s, its towering stone spires, ivy-covered walls, and sprawling marble courtyards were shrouded in a thick coastal fog.
At 11:45 PM, three unmarked tactical vans rolled silently through the wrought-iron gates of the estate, parking along the shadowed tree line.
Inside the lead van, Sarah Miller sat wearing a tailored black tactical suit, her back still taped and bandaged, but her posture rigid and focused. Beside her, Enzo checked the magazine of his custom firearm, while twenty elite enforcers strapped on night-vision gear and silenced weapons.
“Remember the plan,” Enzo instructed, his voice low and calm as he looked around the cabin. “Victor and his team secure the perimeter comms. We breach through the grand conservatory. Our objective is Marcus Thorne’s private study on the third floor where the financial servers are located.”
He turned to Sarah, placing a warm hand on her shoulder. “You stay directly behind me. If things go sideways, you take the armored transport back to the extraction point. Understood?”
“Understood,” Sarah nodded, holding a compact encrypted comms earpiece in her hand.
“Moving out,” Enzo commanded.
They moved like phantoms across the manicured lawns, slipping past stone fountains and marble statues toward the massive glass conservatory at the rear of the mansion.
Inside the brightly lit grand ballroom of the estate, fifty of Marcus Thorne’s highest-ranking lieutenants and international buyers were gathered for a high-stakes syndicate auction, drinking champagne and discussing illegal arms shipments.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered and died.
A heavy, suffocating darkness fell over the ballroom, pierced only by the pale moonlight streaming through the glass dome.
“What’s going on?” a lieutenant shouted in panic.
Before anyone could draw a weapon, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom burst open!
Enzo Caruso stepped into the room like an avenging angel, his custom sidearm raised, flanked by six tactical enforcers projecting green laser sights across the panicked crowd.
“Marcus Thorne!” Enzo’s voice roared through the vaulted hall, echoing with terrifying authority. “Your time is up!”
Chaos erupted. Thorne’s guards scrambled for cover, but Enzo’s team moved with breathtaking speed, disarming and subduing the syndicate members without firing a single lethal shot.
“Sarah, with me!” Enzo barked, turning toward the grand spiral staircase leading to the third-floor study.
Sarah scrambled after him, her boots clicking rapidly against the marble steps. They sprinted up two flights of stairs, dodging stray gunfire from a retreating guard whom Victor quickly neutralized with a single silenced shot.
They reached the heavy mahogany double doors of Marcus Thorne’s private study.
Enzo raised his boot and kicked the door inward with a massive crash!
Inside the luxurious study, surrounded by antique bookshelves and glowing computer terminals, stood Marcus Thorne—a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored tuxedo, holding a gold-plated revolver.
“Caruso,” Thorne sneered, his face twisting into a bitter, venomous grin. “You actually had the balls to show up.”
“You sent an assassin to murder my six-year-old son, Thorne,” Enzo said, stepping into the room, his weapon locked dead on Thorne’s chest. “You forfeited your life the moment you crossed that line.”
Thorne laughed, a dry, mocking sound. “You think killing me changes anything, Enzo? The Vanguard Syndicate is bigger than me. Someone else will take my place tomorrow.”
“Let them try,” Enzo replied coldly. “Because I am burning your empire to ash tonight.”
Thorne’s eyes darted toward Sarah standing behind Enzo, and a cruel smile spread across his face. “Ah, the little waitress. The one who ruined my masterpiece. Tell me, sweetheart—how does it feel to know you’re dying for a mobster?”
Sarah didn't flinch. She stepped out from behind Enzo’s shoulder, her blue eyes blazing with a fierce, unbreakable light.
“I’m not dying for a mobster, Mr. Thorne,” Sarah said clearly, her voice echoing in the quiet study. “I’m protecting my family.”
Before Thorne could raise his revolver to fire—
CRACK!
Enzo’s pistol barked once.
The bullet struck the gold-plated revolver right out of Thorne’s hand, spinning it across the Persian rug. Before Thorne could blink, Enzo crossed the room in two massive bounds, grabbing Thorne by the collar and slamming him hard against the oak bookshelves.
Books rained down around them as Enzo held the syndicate boss suspended in the air.
“It’s over, Marcus,” Enzo whispered, his voice dangerously quiet.

Federal agents, alerted by Victor’s encrypted tip-offs, swarmed into the study seconds later, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Marcus Thorne’s wrists and hauling him away into the night.
The war for the East Coast was finally over.
