Chapter 2 - Blood on the Silver Tray

The crystal chandelier above the ballroom seemed to stretch into slow motion, its glittering diamonds fracturing the amber light into blinding geometric shards.

Sarah Miller’s lungs burned, her mind stripped of every thought except a single, violent imperative: Reach the child.

The man with the silver serpent tie bar—his eyes cold, dead, and focused entirely on the small red-and-blue robot sitting beside six-year-old Leo—tightened his grip on the black pistol. His finger curved around the trigger.

Sarah didn't think about her rent. She didn't think about Toby’s insulin waiting in the small apartment refrigerator in Queens. She only saw the crooked red-and-blue toy and the small brown hair of a boy who had looked at her with pure, innocent trust.

With a final, desperate burst of speed, she launched herself across the polished marble floor.

CRACK!

The first bullet shattered the air, a sharp, deafening explosion that tore through the music and turned the gala into a scene of absolute chaos. The bullet ripped through Sarah’s white Halston Hotel service jacket, grazing her left shoulder, but she didn't stop.

She slammed into Leo’s chair just as the assassin squeezed the trigger a second time.

THUD. THUD.

Two more rounds found their mark, slamming directly into Sarah’s back with the brutal force of a hammer strike. A white-hot agony flared across her ribs, stealing her breath in an instant. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed over Leo, wrapping her body entirely around the child as glass, silverware, and blood rained onto the floor.

“Get down!” Lorenzo Caruso’s voice roared like a wounded animal.

Before the echoes of the gunfire could fade, four of Enzo’s elite bodyguards swarmed the table like a wall of dark stone. Two of them returned fire toward the service entrance, while another tackled Leo and Sarah to the floor, shielding them beneath a massive mahogany banquet table.

The ballroom plunged into terror. Screams drowned out the orchestra. Rich men and women trampled over spilled champagne and diamond-encrusted clutches, scrambling toward the exits.

Beneath the table, Leo began to cry, his small hands clutching Sarah’s blood-soaked apron. “Miss Sarah! You’re... you’re leaking red!”

Sarah’s vision swam, the golden lights of the ballroom blurring into dark, dizzying circles. Blood pooled beneath her, warm and slick against the marble. She forced her eyes open, looking up through a haze of pain at Lorenzo Caruso.

The formidable crime boss, a man feared from Brooklyn to Palermo, was kneeling beside them. His custom Italian suit was smeared with Sarah’s blood. His hands, usually steady and lethal, were trembling as he pulled his son close to his chest, checking Leo over frantically.

“He’s... he’s safe,” Sarah whispered, her voice a faint, rattling breath. Her fingers twitched against the marble, trying to grip the edge of her stained apron. “The... the man with the serpent...”

Enzo’s head snapped up. His flint-dark eyes locked onto the service entrance where the assassin had already vanished into the kitchen corridors, leaving behind only a dropped silver tie bar shaped like a serpent wrapped around a dagger.

Enzo reached down, picking up the silver serpent from the bloody floor. His jaw tightened until the muscles along his jawline bulged like steel cables.

“Who are you?” Enzo demanded, his voice dropping into a terrifying, gravelly whisper that cut through the surrounding screams. “Why did you take those bullets for my son?”

Sarah couldn't answer. The darkness rushed in, pulling her under like a heavy tide, and her eyes fluttered shut.

“Get the medical team!” Enzo roared, sweeping his son into one arm and lifting Sarah’s limp body with his other, ignoring the blood soaking through his clothes as he carried her toward the private elevators. “If she dies, burn this entire hotel to the ground!”
