Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The emergency board meeting on the forty-fifth floor of Cross Meridian Tower was a masterclass in corporate betrayal.
Outside, the Boston skyline was obscured by sheets of cold autumn rain. Inside, the climate-controlled executive boardroom hummed with tense silence as twenty board members sat around the massive glass table.
Nathaniel pushed the double doors open with a force that rattled the hinges.
He didn't wear a tie. His sleeves were rolled up, exposing forearms corded with muscle and tension. Behind him walked Elena—still in her gray cleaning uniform, holding little Maisie’s hand—while Marcus Bell and two private security guards flanked the entrance.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Cross’s longtime associate and current board chairman, Richard Vance. Vance didn't even stand up when Nathaniel entered. He just spun his Montblanc pen between his fingers with a sickeningly relaxed smile.
“Nathaniel,” Vance said smoothly. “Glad you could join us. We were just discussing the emergency restructuring of the company.”
Nathaniel walked straight to the table, slamming the leather folder down onto the glass with a sharp bang that made several executives flinch.
“The only thing being restructured today is your prison sentence, Richard,” Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register.
Vance chuckled softly. “Is that so? Because according to our emergency proxy filings, the board has voted to strip you of your executive powers due to ‘gross financial mismanagement and failure to secure primary estate assets.’”
Graham Cross, who had hurried in behind Nathaniel, looked panicked. “Richard, what is this? You said we were just reviewing audit logs!”
Vance turned his cold, calculating gaze onto Graham. “I said a lot of things, Graham. But business is business. When your cousin spent eight months staring at a wooden box instead of signing off on our overseas acquisitions, some of us decided to take matters into our own hands.”
Vance stood up, smoothing his Italian wool suit. He pulled a folded legal document from his briefcase.
“We filed a motion this morning claiming that Arthur Cross died intestate regarding his primary startup capital shares, making them corporate property subject to redistribution. Effective ten minutes ago, the board holds controlling interest.”
Nathaniel didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice.
Instead, he reached into the leather folder, pulled out the forty-year-old partnership agreement bearing Ruth Gallagher’s signature, and slid it across the glass table toward Vance.
“You might want to check the provenance of those startup shares, Richard,” Nathaniel said quietly.
Vance glanced down at the paper. He expected another useless sentimental trinket. But as his eyes scanned the yellowed ink, the smug smile vanished from his face. His jaw went slack.
“This... this is forged,” Vance stammered, his color turning pasty. “A retrofitted artifact. It holds no legal weight!”
“It was locked inside a mechanical vault that required a specific acoustic sequence known only to my father and the woman who funded his very first truck rental in 1986,” Nathaniel said, leaning over the table, his dark eyes boring into Vance’s soul. “Authenticated by three separate handwriting experts before I left the house this morning. Fifty percent of every asset this company owns belongs by law to Ruth Gallagher’s direct descendant.”
Nathaniel pointed a finger directly at Elena standing by the door.
“Meet your new majority shareholder.”
Silence descended on the boardroom so absolute that the hum of the air vents sounded like a jet engine.
Vance stared at Elena, then back at Nathaniel, sheer panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade.
“You can’t do this!” Vance shouted, slamming his hands on the table. “She’s a maid! She doesn't know the first thing about corporate governance, real estate, or international shipping! She’ll bankrupt us within forty-eight hours!”
“Maybe,” Nathaniel replied coldly. “But she’ll do it owning your office chair.”
Before Vance could sputter another protest, Marcus Bell stepped forward, clicking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs against his palm.
“Richard Vance, you’re under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and illegal asset manipulation,” Marcus announced crisply.
Two security guards grabbed Vance by the arms, dragging him kicking and screaming toward the elevators as the rest of the board members sat frozen in sheer terror.
Nathaniel turned around, walking slowly across the plush carpet until he stood right in front of Elena.
“Are you all right?” he asked, his voice softening entirely—losing every trace of the ruthless billionaire he had been five minutes ago.
Elena looked up at him, her chest heaving, the reality of what had just happened crashing over her.

“I came here to clean your library,” she whispered, her eyes wide. “Now I own half of it?”
“More than half,” Nathaniel said, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. “And if you’re wondering what your first executive decision should be... I suggest we fire the entire legal department.”
