Chapter 10 - The Rosewood Box

One year later.

The private library of the Cross estate in Boston was bathed in the warm, golden light of an October afternoon.

The rain tapped softly against the tall glass windows—almost identical to the morning a year ago when a little girl in light-up sneakers had changed the course of two families forever.

In the center of the room, resting on the polished rosewood pedestal, sat the rosewood box.

Only this time, it wasn't locked.

Nathaniel stood by the grand fireplace, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, watching with a soft, protective smile.

On the Persian rug, four-year-old Maisie was carefully placing a brand-new, brightly colored construction-paper sun onto the corner of the desk, while her baby brother—a ten-month-old named Arthur—babbled happily from a plush playpen nearby.

The heavy oak door opened, and Elena walked in, carrying a tray of fresh coffee and pastries. She wore a soft emerald dress that matched the deep green of her eyes.

Nathaniel walked over, taking the tray from her hands and setting it on the table before wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her flush against his chest.

“You know,” Nathaniel murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder, “we never did figure out all the songs your grandmother knew.”

Elena leaned back into his embrace, smiling as she looked over at the open rosewood box, where the weathered photograph of young Arthur and Ruth still stood proudly in the center.

“She didn't need to teach us all her songs, Nathaniel,” Elena whispered, turning around in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. “Just the ones that mattered.”

Nathaniel lowered his head, pressing his lips softly to hers as the rain fell gently outside, washing away the past and welcoming a future built on music, truth, and an unbreakable love.
