Chapter 9 - THE LIFE THEY CHOSEOne year later, the Russo name meant something different.

Not fear.

Not violence.

Not underground deals.

It meant business.

The old warehouses became legitimate distribution centers.

The former nightclub became a luxury restaurant.

The foundation funded housing for struggling families.

Sienna's brother, Leo, rebuilt his technology company.

Her mother opened a small bakery in Queens.

And Robert Hayes?

He finally came home.

Every Sunday, the family gathered around the same table.

It was something Sienna had never imagined.

Her father laughing with Damian.

Her mother arguing with Leo.

Silas complaining about his shoulder.

And Damian quietly watching everyone.

One evening, Sienna found him alone on the balcony.

"You disappeared."

"I needed air."

She stood beside him.

"Thinking?"

"Always."

She smiled.

"About what?"

"You."

"That's dangerous."

"I know."

He reached for her hand.

"We're getting married next month."

"I know."

"Are you nervous?"

"No."

"Really?"

"I'm marrying you, not the Mafia."

He laughed.

"The Mafia is gone."

"Good."

She rested her head against his shoulder.

Then she noticed his expression.

"What?"

"Sometimes I still think about that night."

"The club?"

"Yes."

"The signal."

She smiled.

"I thought it wouldn't work."

"It almost didn't."

"But it did."

Damian looked at her.

"You know what I remember?"

"What?"

"The moment you tapped your collarbone."

"Why?"

"Because everyone in that hallway saw a frightened waitress."

He paused.

"I saw someone asking for help without saying a word."

Sienna looked at him.

"And you came."

"I had to."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You chose to."

He smiled.

"Yes."

Their wedding was held at a private estate overlooking the Hudson.

No weapons.

No criminal associates.

No secret rooms.

Only family and friends.

Sienna walked down the aisle beside her father.

Damian waited.

He looked nervous.

For the first time in her life, Sienna found that comforting.

When she reached him, Robert placed her hand in Damian's.

"Take care of my daughter."

Damian nodded.

"Always."

Sienna smiled.

During the vows, Damian spoke first.

"I spent most of my life believing protection meant standing between someone and danger."

He looked at her.

"Then I met you."

His voice shook slightly.

"And I learned protection also means standing beside someone while they choose their own path."

Sienna's eyes filled with tears.

"I promise never to make your world smaller."

He squeezed her hand.

"I promise to help you build a bigger one."

When it was her turn, Sienna smiled.

"I was twenty years old when I asked a dangerous man for sanctuary."

Everyone laughed softly.

She continued.

"I thought he was going to save me."

She looked at Damian.

"I didn't realize I would end up saving him too."

Damian's eyes became wet.

She whispered:

"You taught me that being protected doesn't mean being powerless."

He kissed her.

The room erupted in applause.

And somewhere outside, Manhattan continued moving.

Unaware that one of its most feared men had finally chosen peace.
