Chapter 10 - SANCTUARYFive years later, Sienna woke to sunlight.

She rolled over.

Damian's side of the bed was empty.

She smiled.

He had probably gone downstairs.

She heard laughter.

Children.

Then Damian's voice.

"Careful!"

Sienna walked downstairs.

Their four-year-old daughter, Ava, was running across the living room.

Damian chased her.

"You're going to fall."

"I won't!"

She tripped.

Damian caught her.

Ava laughed.

"Again!"

"No."

"Again!"

"You nearly gave me a heart attack."

Sienna leaned against the doorway.

"She's your daughter."

Damian looked at her.

"Unfortunately."

Ava gasped.

"Daddy!"

He smiled.

"Fortunately."

Sienna laughed.

This was the life she had once believed impossible.

Her mother was healthy.

Her father was home.

Leo's company had become successful.

Silas had married and had two children.

And Damian?

He was no longer the feared man who ruled New York from shadows.

He was a father who packed lunches.

A husband who forgot where he left his keys.

A man who sometimes woke at three in the morning because his daughter had a nightmare.

The world still knew his name.

But now, it meant something else.

Responsibility.

Integrity.

Family.

That evening, Sienna found an old box in the attic.

Inside was the photograph from the night everything changed.

She sat on the floor.

Damian entered.

"What are you doing?"

"Remembering."

He sat beside her.

She showed him the photograph.

The young woman.

The frightened eyes.

The bruised throat.

The man beside her who had looked at her like the world had suddenly become dangerous.

Damian smiled.

"You were terrified."

"I was."

"I wasn't."

She laughed.

"You were."

"I was angry."

"Same thing."

"No."

She looked at him.

"What's the difference?"

He thought.

"Anger is what happens when you're afraid of losing something."

Sienna smiled.

"Something?"

He took her hand.

"Someone."

She leaned against him.

"Do you ever wish you'd walked past me that night?"

"Never."

"Even knowing everything that happened?"

"Especially knowing."

She kissed his cheek.

Ava's voice came from downstairs.

"Mommy! Daddy! Dinner!"

Sienna laughed.

"Coming!"

They stood.

Before leaving, Sienna looked at the photograph one final time.

Then she placed it back inside the box.

She didn't need it anymore.

Because the woman in that picture had believed she was asking a stranger for one night of safety.

She hadn't known that one silent gesture would change the direction of two lives.

She hadn't known the dangerous man she feared would become the man she trusted most.

She hadn't known her missing father would come home.

She hadn't known her brother would rebuild his life.

She hadn't known her mother would finally stop living in fear.

And she certainly hadn't known that the man who once commanded an empire would eventually learn that the greatest form of power was choosing not to use it.

Years earlier, in a dark corridor beneath Manhattan, Sienna had tapped twice against her collarbone.

She had asked without words:

Protect me.

Damian had answered:

I will.

But he had given her something more valuable than protection.

He had given her a choice.

And she had given him something he had never possessed.

A reason to come home.

Later that night, after Ava was asleep, Sienna and Damian stood on their balcony.

Manhattan glittered below.

The city was still loud.

Still ambitious.

Still dangerous in places.

But it no longer frightened her.

Damian wrapped an arm around her.

"Cold?"

"A little."

He pulled her closer.

"Better?"

"Much."

She smiled.

"Damian?"

"Yes?"

"If you could go back to that night..."

"What?"

"Would you do anything differently?"

He looked at the skyline.

Then at her.

"Yes."

"What?"

"I would have noticed you sooner."

Sienna laughed softly.

"You noticed me."

"No."

He shook his head.

"I noticed a waitress."

He kissed her forehead.

"I didn't understand that I was looking at my future."

Her smile faded into something tender.

"I love you."

Damian closed his eyes for a moment.

Those words had once terrified him.

Now they were the safest thing he'd ever heard.

"I love you too."

Inside the house, Ava laughed in her sleep.

Sienna smiled.

Damian held her tighter.

And beneath the glittering lights of Manhattan, the former mafia boss who had once ruled through fear stood quietly beside the woman who had changed everything.

No guns.

No threats.

No enemies waiting in the shadows.

Only a family.

Only home.

Only love.

And if anyone ever asked Sienna what happened after she secretly signaled the most dangerous man in New York for help, she would always give the same answer.

He saved her life.

She saved his heart.

May you like

And together...

they built a life neither of them had ever believed they deserved.
