Chapter 8 - The Art of the Takedown

Forty-eight hours later, deep inside the heavily fortified subterranean penthouse suite of the Cross Tower in downtown Chicago, the trap was set.

The penthouse overlooked the glittering, freezing expanse of Lake Michigan. Down below, the sprawling metropolis hummed with life, completely unaware of the silent financial and tactical chess match playing out in the upper echelons of the city’s underworld.

Julian, Mateo, and Noah were safely tucked away in a secure, soundproofed nursery suite on the floor below, attended by a team of trusted female security operatives and entertained by an endless supply of new toys and cartoons.

In the main command center of the penthouse, holographic tactical displays illuminated the dark room with blue and red light. Marcus stood by the communication array, while Claire sat at a custom mahogany desk surrounded by three open laptops, her fingers flying across the keyboards with blinding speed.

Gabriel stood behind her, watching the real-time financial telemetry scroll across the screens.

“Routing numbers confirmed,” Claire announced sharply, hitting the enter key with a definitive click. “We’ve just triggered an automated freeze on Donato Moretti’s primary Swiss asset accounts. The funds are currently being redirected into federal escrow accounts under a sealed Department of Justice subpoena issued twenty minutes ago.”

“And his enforcers?” Gabriel asked.

“Paid through those exact Swiss accounts,” Claire smiled coldly. “Without their weekly wire transfers, Moretti’s private security detail is already receiving cancellation notices on their encrypted messaging apps. Half of his capos are packing their bags and heading for the airport as we speak.”

Suddenly, the heavy steel security door of the penthouse command center chimed.

Marcus stepped over to the intercom monitor, pressing the speaker button. “Report.”

“Mr. Cross,” a nervous voice crackled through the speaker—one of Gabriel’s senior captains stationed in the lobby. “We have an uninvited guest in the private elevator. Donato Moretti’s primary consiglieri, Vincent Vance—no relation to the East Coast crew—is on his way up. He’s alone, unarmed, and requesting an immediate audience.”

Gabriel exchanged a dark, knowing look with Claire.

“Let him up,” Gabriel commanded smoothly. “Send him straight to the boardroom.”

Five minutes later the heavy oak doors of the penthouse boardroom swung open.

Vincent Vance—a sleek, aging man in an expensive gray tweed suit who looked more like a university professor than a mob enforcer—stepped into the room. His face was slick with cold sweat, and his hands trembled slightly as he clutched a leather briefcase to his chest.

He didn't look at Gabriel. His eyes went immediately to Claire, sitting calmly at the head of the long glass conference table with a tablet in her hand.

“Mrs. Cross,” Vincent swallowed hard, his voice shaking. “We... we need to talk.”

“Sit down, Vincent,” Gabriel said, stepping out from the shadows of the room and taking the seat beside Claire.

Vincent sat down heavily, setting the briefcase on the glass table. He pushed it across toward Claire.

“Donato’s accounts are locked,” Vincent said, skipping any polite pleasantries. “Every single wire transfer bounced thirty minutes ago. Our men are refusing to deploy because their families haven't received their stipends. You didn't just hit our bank accounts—you completely severed our arterial supply.”

Claire opened the briefcase, glancing briefly at the thick stack of physical paper inside before looking back up at the consiglieri.

“You brought surrender terms?” Claire asked.

“Donato is willing to step down,” Vincent whispered, leaning forward desperately. “He’ll sign over his shipping docks in the port of Chicago, dissolve his territorial claims across the eastern seaboard, and retire to a private estate in Sicily. In exchange... we want the asset freeze lifted, and we want safe passage out of the country for him and his immediate family.”

Gabriel leaned back in his leather chair, resting his chin on his interlaced fingers. He looked at Vincent with the cold, absolute authority of a king surveying a defeated vassal.

“There is only one problem with your proposal, Vincent,” Gabriel said softly.

Vincent blinked nervously. “What’s that, Mr. Cross?”

“You assumed we were negotiating,” Gabriel said.

Before Vincent could react, the side doors of the boardroom flew open, and four federal agents in dark suits—led by an Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabriel had cultivated a quiet alliance with over the past three years—stepped into the room, flashing federal badges and zip-ties.

“Vincent Vance, you are under arrest for racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit interstate extortion,” the lead federal agent announced, slamming the cuffs onto the consiglieri’s wrists before he could even stand up.

As Vincent was dragged out of the room, shouting vainly about diplomatic immunity and illegal search warrants, the room fell quiet once more.

Claire closed the leather briefcase, sliding it across the table toward Marcus.

“The Moretti family syndicate is officially extinct,” Claire stated, her voice as calm as if she were closing out a routine grading rubric for her college students.

Gabriel looked at her, a profound mixture of awe, respect, and overwhelming love shining in his gray-green eyes.
