Chapter 7 - The Chicago Gambit

The private airstrip outside Scranton was blanketed in a thick layer of pre-dawn frost. A sleek, twin-engine Gulfstream G650 sat idling on the tarmac, its turbine engines whining softly against the cold mountain air.

Claire sat in the luxurious leather cabin of the private jet, watching through the triple-pane window as the snow-covered pine trees of Pennsylvania gave way to the gray, churning expanse of the Midwest sky below. Julian, Mateo, and Noah were asleep in the private stateroom in the back, exhausted by the relentless whirlwind of the past twenty-four hours.

Gabriel sat across the aisle from Claire, his suit changed for a fresh black turtleneck and a tactical wool coat. He was reviewing encrypted satellite feeds on a secure military-grade tablet, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the screen.

“You’re flying us straight into the lion’s den,” Claire said, breaking the silence of the cabin. Her voice was calm, steady, and laced with a sharp challenge. “Donato Moretti controls the entire south side of Chicago. Moving against him on his home turf isn't a strategy, Gabriel—it’s suicide.”

Gabriel looked up from his tablet, meeting her gaze without hesitation.

“Donato Moretti thinks I’m vulnerable,” Gabriel said calmly. “He thinks that because I’ve spent the last five years trying to clean up my syndicates, trying to transition our holdings into legitimate real estate and venture capital, that I’ve gone soft. He thinks that discovering I have a family is my fatal weakness.”

“And isn't it?” Claire countered, leaning forward. “As long as Julian, Mateo, and Noah exist, you have targets painted on your back. Every rival boss in the country knows where to strike to bleed you dry.”

Gabriel reached across the aisle, placing his warm, heavy hand over hers. She tried to pull away, but his grip was firm, gentle, and inescapable.

“No, Claire,” Gabriel said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable conviction. “They aren't my weakness. They are my anchor. For five years, I was fighting for a hollow empire—a stack of money and territory with nobody to share it with. Now, I have everything to fight for. And Donato Moretti is about to find out what happens when you threaten a father’s cubs.”

Claire looked down at his hand over hers. The anger that had sustained her through five years of single motherhood, loneliness, and fear didn't vanish—it transmuted into something far more dangerous: an alliance born of shared blood and mutual survival.

“If we do this,” Claire said quietly, her gray-green eyes—so like her sons’—flashing with sudden resolve, “we do it my way. No blind massacres. No reckless shootouts. We dismantle Donato Moretti from the inside out.”

Gabriel’s lips twitched into a slow, grim smile—the first genuine smile she had seen on his face in half a decade.

“And how do you propose we do that, Mrs. Cross?”

“By auditing his books,” Claire replied smoothly. “Serena wasn't the only one who kept meticulous records of your corporate front companies. While you were busy running the streets, I spent the last three years getting a master’s degree in forensic accounting and financial auditing. I know how the Morettis launder their money through European shell corporations. And I know the exact bank routing numbers Donato uses to pay his enforcers.”

Gabriel stared at her in absolute, stunned silence. The quiet art teacher he had left behind in Westchester five years ago had evolved into a lethal financial strategist.

“My God,” Gabriel whispered, a low laugh rumbling in his chest. “Donato Moretti never stood a chance.”
